Is it just me, or does Cam Newton never scramble anymore?

I can't be the only one that realized this.  He used to be an exceptional scrambler, and he saved many drives because of his ability to elude pressure and take off for good gains.  I know the OL probably has something to do with it, but it's like he's not even looking to scramble anymore.  I get not wanting him to get hit, but at the same time scrambling is his game.  We should have never drafted him if we didn't plan on him scrambling, he's great at it.  Cam is definitely a very good passer, but I wouldn't say he's elite at it by any means.  To maximize his effectiveness I think he has to scramble

He doesn't .. I've yet to see him break big like past seasons. My partner made note of this today when we watched you guys play. Called it a hangover from last year. He's still looking for those deep veritical plays that he hit all last year. Only difference is your OL was great & they let him do so .. This year not so much.

He's actually not that great of a scrambler. He's a good read-option guy on called running plays because of his size and straight ahead speed. I don't even think likes running. I don't think any QB likes running in this league.

Everything about this is wrong. I feel like the read option is 95% of the time a wasted play for us right now. Normally gets us 2-3 yards and that's it. Cam used to reel off 10+ yards easily when scrambling, he's a fuging train in the open field

Scrambling implies more than just running around in the pocket and avoiding the sack. Scrambling = avoiding pressure and finding the open receiver, i.e. throwing.   Cam is above average at that, but he is not GREAT at it.  Designed run plays do not = scrambling. Like I said, he has never really been great at scrambling. He's a true pocket passer that the coaches use as the primary running back.

Russel Wilson, for instance, is a great scrambler. He do those half-circle dimes out of the pocket into the flat waaaaay better than a big ass dude like Cam. That's one of the reason why Wilson's impact throwing play percentages are so great.  Wilson move the throwing lanes much quicker than Cam.  Like I said, Cam is a pocket QB.

Been keying in on this lately, without his scrambling it makes it easier for teams to game plan against us, sometimes I'll see a lb spying but some of the passing plays where he holds the ball too long I'd wish he take off running, Cam is still the passer from
The pocket but those scrambles from last year were a huge part of his MVP season and is getting to the Super Bowl.

Those were mostly designed running plays. Cam audibles and check downs as much as any QB in the league from the pocket.

I disagree on the check down part, cam rarely checks down when the option is available, I consider his legs as a check down, and I'm talking about non designed plays not the one yard dives from the shotgun. When teams have to dedicate a Lb to spying, usually there fastest or best , that opens up a lot for Olsen and our wr. I hope it's not health related but I hope the coaches key in on that and find a fix

I don't come on this sight that much anymore, but yes he never scrambles. Now a days I just bitch to my friend s about this stuff instead of to you guys. Also i seem to be somewhat of an alcoholic bc of this season. anyways, yeah he refuses to scramble. We had so many clutch cam scrambling plays last year and in 13, not this year. I really hope cam is injured or this is fixable in someway and not just him refusing to run.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
