Not sure I agree with this. There are plenty of teams that suck and the media still thrives. Say you put out articles on how Rivera's teams have historically been bad coming out of halftime and byes, or articles questioning Rivera's lack of willingness to make changes to his staff, or anything negative, then I am positive the clicks would be there. That has been the problem with this media group historically. They refuse to be controversial or challenge the team at all.

You are absolutely right, there are only so many Panther suck articles you can write, but there are an endless amount of articles of why and how to fix these issues that they can write.

Fair. But I think this also goes back to what Anybodyhome said and these guys have to walk a thin line with this organization to keep their credentials. That's an assumption on my part, but he's right....no one ever asks the hard questions that should be asked.

Zod has actually said that's not true.

The Panthers and the Observer - per Zod - have an odd sort of symbiotic relationship.  Honestly I'd imagine it's not that different from what most organizations have.  Everybody has questions they'd rather not answer but they're gonna get asked.

Ron's thrown a mini-tantrum or two in press conferences before.  If the organization were really that sensitive, I kinda doubt Joe Person would still have credentials.

Reality is that, outside of Voth, we just haven't had very good beat writers for a while now.  Hoping for good things from the new girl, but not having Voth will create a void.

I am not trying to be controversial but why is that acceptable. I feel like the fan base has accepted that for too long. Can you imagine how the media would react if Todd Bowles threw a temper tantrum or back in the day Tom Coughlin did? They would get destroyed.

It is ridiculous how Rivera gets so defensive on some stuff, and the media let's him get away with it. How many times did he give the schedule excuse in the beginning of the year and the media let that go.

Also don't get me started on how he has a weekly spot on NFL radio but you will never hear him on WFNZ. The Panthers treat their media like dirt, and the media accepts it. So in my eyes both are at fault and it is the fans who suffer.

I've seen first hand Panthers PR have a "talking to" with a journalist over a tweet criticizing Mick Mixon.

No doubt there is a delicate balance for every team. Just look at the Eagles for an extreme example of what a team is capable of http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20170102_Eagles_eject_Inquirer_beat_writer_from_press_box_during_game.html

Back to BBR and that business, one of the toughest parts I imagine would be "competing" against the team and it's website itself. In this business probably the most important thing is access. The Panthers are naturally going to give more access to their own guys at Panthers.com. Of course, the guys at Panthers.com are toeing the company line even more so.

Seems like there is only so many "the Panthers suck because" articles that can be written, no? But truthfully it starts with the viewers even more than the media. When the team sucks the readers aren't there - the traffic isn't there.

Maybe. But we are all here. There was so much content the past few years that just disappeared this season.  It seems if someone wants to cover something professionally they should be able to find and generate interest in seasons that aren't 15-1 because that's not typical.  Im not just talking Voth either. Though I think he lost interest himself before this season.

There has to be a voice/narrative of a team that can generate interest between saying we are the greatest or we are the worst.

I couldn't name a single team that doesn't have an often adversarial relationship with the reporters that cover them.

As to the quality of the writers we have, that's not so much the team as the outlets that hire them.

A few years back, someone at the Observer said "this Joe Person guy sounds good" and here we are.

Because that takes having knowledge and skills.

    • Truth. Like when UNC hired Butch Davis and then we get hit for recruiting violations. Like yeah, no poo. Dude coached Miami when they we paying like the 33rd NFL team. What did you expect?
    • He's a hard player to rank, cause he is a young NT. I do see his abilities to branch out among the DL. That's the only way for him to land in the 1st, some team has to believe he's got the stuff to play DE or T3.... I just don't see using 19 on him, I feel there should be around 7 players just ranked higher than him for the Panthers team.  ___________________________________________________________________   Now you are a roster nut like me. Im tossing this into fire, I think a good move is to trade UP, yes rare. Just the roster #s tell me 5 rookies and no more than 2 starters will make the team. I feel 5 is magic number.    QB- 2  BY, Pickett RB- 3   Chubba, Brooks(pls), etienne TE- 4   Sanders, Temble, Evans, Draft pick/major/franks/UDFA OL- 10   Walker, Lewis, Fortner, Hunt, Motown, Zavailla, Samac, Stone, Draft pick, Draft pick/Charles/carter WR-  6   Tmac, XL, Coker, Metch, Horn, Tremay   offense=  25 with 3 draft picks   DL-  6   Brown, Brown, Wharton, Ray, Cam, Hunter/draft pick Ed-   5  Phillips, Nic, Prince, Jones, ST/incoom/hampton ILB-   5  Lloyd, Wallace, Bam, Claud, draft pick CB-    5 Horn, Jackson, Thor, Evans, draft pick/CSN/UDFA SS-  4  Scott, More, Ramsom, Sim   Defense = 25 with 2 picks   ST = known 3+o+d = 53 roster   SO I see only room for 5-6 with factoring in UDFA pool. That tells me to trade up! Bonus the 1st+3rd gets in front of TB yucs. Then use one of the 5ths+2nd to draft another target. That's your two starters and use the 4th, 5th and 6th for the development OTs and what ever the best player are at the pick/DB. The last couple years they have added 2-3 UDFA each year, maybe the same this year too. Soooooooo Im normally 95% trade back, but above made me change my mind. I do not want to waive 5th rounder, I feel thats high with players on the bench.    ?? There's waiver claims too, they have done that each year.
