Backfilling at DB Coach

Connection wise...

Chris Harris played two years under Rivera in Chicago. He also recently coached in Rivera's old stomping grounds in San Diego.

Perry Fewell has less of a connection to Rivera (a year as a DB coach in Chicago before getting the DC job in Buffalo) but has a longer, better resumé than Harris. He also has a Gettleman connection from his time with the Giants.

Peanut Tillman obviously has the most in the connection department but there are mixed to negative signals as to whether he wants to go into coaching.

If RR promotes Richard Rodgers he should be fired on the spot.

I'd be ready to throw my hands up and surrender at that point.

The importance of this hire shouldn't be underestimated. With the young secondary we have, it's pretty important that they have a solid coach.

We now know per Wilks that the decision on this will come in the next few days.

Perry Fewell is the primary name being mentioned, but it's worth remembering that both Rivera and Wilks coached Hitman Harris in his time with the Bears.

Can't help but wonder if he'll get a shot.

1. Richard Rodgers

Perhaps the likeliest candidate given the loyalty of both the franchise and head coach Ron Rivera is the team’s assistant secondary coach in Rodgers. Rodgers, who has spent much time at Rivera’s side, could follow right in the blueprint Wilks did for a promotion.

Hired as a special teams assistant in 2012, Rodgers would move up as the special teams coordinator for the final seven games of that season and hold the title until 2014. After being responsible for the league’s worst return coverage that year, the former University of California defensive back would be transitioned into what is now his current role at the start of the 2015 campaign.

2. Perry Fewell

Mentioned in our defensive coordinator possibilities as a considerable long shot, Fewell is obviously much more likely to land himself a gig in Charlotte, N.C., a 30-minute drive from his hometown of Cramerton, for this position.

Fewell, most notably the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants from 2011 to 2016, spent the last two seasons as the engineer for the Washington Redskins’ secondary. He, along with three other assistant coaches, were let go last week, making him available for a possible reunion with Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Gettleman’s New York link to Fewell, as well as his past interest that led to a head coaching inquiry for Carolina back in 2011, could open up an opportunity.

3. Charles Tillman

A true wildcard, Tillman is undoubtedly the fan favorite for the job. But is it even possible? Maybe.

The future Hall-of-Fame cornerback left a great impression on the organization in his lone season donning the black and blue. His success at the pro level, ties to Rivera from 2015 and their Chicago days, veteran knowhow and coaching experience from last summer make “Peanut” an intriguing option.

Jaguars hired Perry Fewell as secondary coach.

Fewell was fired from the same role in Washington after the season. The Panthers had interest in Fewell, but his ties are strong with Jaguars EVP Tom Coughlin. Fewell runs an aggressive secondary that should create more turnovers. He'll work under DC Todd Wash in Jacksonville.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
