KK Contract - The Decision to Tag

Help me understand something here.  A lot of people around here seem to think that KK is not in the long term plans of the Carolina Panthers, and that Vernon Butler is being groomed to take his place.  If this is indeed the case, do we really want Short to get the tag this season? He will cost ~13 million (I think) and then he would just be gone the next season.  Wouldn't it just be better to let Butler assume the role, if the plan truly is to let Short walk.

To me, it makes much more sense to tag him only if we plan to have him stick around for the long term.

As we saw last season with Josh, just letting high end talent walk for nothing is a pretty terrible idea. 13 million is likely under market value for what Short would cost so for one year it makes sense to just tag him. Shorts ability and personality fit with the team isn't why people don't think he will be here long term, it's entirely because of age and the contract he reportedly wants from us(basically qb money which would be stupid to give to a DT). So if you can keep him at a fair number for a season while he is still productive it should be a no-brainer.

If we have the space, yes it's absolutely smart to tag Short. Gettleman values pass rushers over CBs. You also have to look at our DE situation. It's a complete unknown right now. Both of our starting DEs are going to be free agents. Ealy is the only DE that sees major playing time who is under contract for next season. I think Gettleman may have learned a lesson last season. He cockily let Norman walk and our secondary got absolutely TORCHED early in the season. That's what happens when you're playing a bunch of rookies at CB. I hope we don't make that same mistake on the DL next season. Tag Short and if Butler develops as hoped, let him walk after next season and get a 2018 comp pick.

To clarify here, Butler is being groomed, as in present tense.  He is no where near ready to take over for Short.  We need Short badly on our D-Line as he is the most polished and consistently disruptive player.  Star is that type of player too, but you need a second consistent threat to punish teams that decide to double team one of the threats.  Butler is no where near threat level midnight (Pie if you know the reference).

Let Josh walk for nothing? Please we got a 3rd rd comp pick for him. You gotta learn and understand the game man.

First. There is a real good chance that if we sign KK long term, by the end of that contract, his salary would be right in line with his play. The salary cap will be going up. So, by the time the last few years get here, his cap hit will be right in line with a player of his stature.

So, in the next few years, as the cap keeps rising as it has, paying KK will not seem like that big a deal. Ask anyone. Interior penetration is by far the most effective.

Up the middle defense is where it is at. KK, Luke, and...a SS that actually works. And our Defense is Championship worthy.

Franchise him this year if you must. But a long term deal is ideal. Because KK is an integral part of our Defensive plan. And a few extra dollars is worth the price.

if DG lets KK walk, he goes against his whole philosophy that building a championship caliber team starts in the trenches. No way he lets him walk without a tag or a long term deal. he loves his hog mollies

The tag was only 12.7 Mill in Madden btw.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
