How much do we trust Mayo?

I think Mayo has at least proven he deserves a chance to back up Luke. We also have Cash getting up to speed in switching from college strong safety to NFL linebacker. I like our depth in the linebacker position. We also resigned Ben Jacobs for a vet presence. He might not make it through training camp if we can snag another LB that is better but if DG doesn't add anyone else to the LB spot in good with what we got!

While Mayo looked better as the season wore on and he got more acclimated to the game, always being conscious of Luke's concussion history is smart.  I hate to say it, but we do need a strong and viable backup for Luke.  Is Mayo that guy?  Who knows?

Here's what I think the Panthers ought to do.  Maybe later in the draft, or in UDFAs, find the kid with the most football smarts at LB.  The Zach Thomas type.  Maybe he tested poorly, but he's a great football player.  Keep doing that every year.  Eventually, we'll find the players we need to step in for Luke next time he's concussed, or if he's forced to retire.

It sucks to think about.  I would love to see some kind of change happen (magic?), where Luke can play for another 10 years, no concussions, and go down as one of the best to ever play (he's on his way now).  I don't think we need to really dump a 1st or 2nd round pick in a back up MLB, unless something crazy happens in the 2nd round or something.  Sadly, we've kind of gone through great MLBs:  Dan Morgan, Jon Beason, and now we're hoping Luke can stay healthy.  What poopy luck.

I've said this else where but I think we should throw a 1 contract at Stephen Tulloch, that is, if we can afford to have a backup LB that doesn't play special teams. He should be fairly cheap and seems to be a high character vet with NC ties that can add to our leadership profile.  At least see what he still has for camp. If he blows, cut him, if he still has value, then, if we are in a pinch, you can play BPA: Tulloch or Mayo.
