Simple, we are not drafting a Safety in a defense that values the front 7.

Free Safety it does. Draft is set up nicely this year but add a FS like Hooker to our defense and we give up 7 points or less a game.

Hahaha, prepare to be disappointed guys. Howard isn't on our radar at that spot. If we were picking in the 20s, then I'd agree but we're picking in the Top 10.

Fournette

Hooker

Adams

Thomas

Allen

We're picking one of these prospects.

Would probably agree however we really don't know what Gettleman looks for in early picks. Since arriving the earliest we have had was 14 and had a huge hole at DT when Star fell. Nobody was really expecting the Shaq pick and the Butler pick raised some eye brows as well.

We must also remember everybody thought he was crazy for picking up KK and Bradberry in the 2nd.

Everyone thought he was always cheap and frugal (even though we never had $$ to spend) and this year he has been aggressive in FA.

The fact is this: We really don't know what Gettleman will do. We think it will be Dline or RB. Safety is a possibility but who knows how much he values the safety position.

I'm not really able to focus on any draft analysis this year, and even if I had time, I'm not really strong at scouting / player evaluation.  So, for me right now, I have no real clue who we might be targeting at #8 beyond all the chatter I read here and on Twitter, etc.

Obviously names like Fournette and Adams stand out.  I'm a little less clear on how to rank the DEs like Allen, Thomas etc.  Howard looks like an exciting player, but is a TE at #8 a reach?

Looking at the age & contract status of players on our roster, I see DE and S as both big needs and particularly STRATEGIC picks this year.  If you've got old guys like Peppers, CJ and Mike Adams around, you want to capitalize on their experience and give them a chance to mentor young guys.  Problem is we don't have a lot of young guys on the roster at those positions.  I'm pretty sure we plan to draft a DE and S and draft 'em HIGH.

We also really need a TE#2 to learn behind Greg and hopefully give us the possibility of a serious double TE threat.  OJ Howard would be awesome.

We clearly need a RB for the future....  If Fournette is there, it's still hard to imagine the Panthers passing on him.

We need more Oline depth.  (Primarily Tackle)

We need another WR threat.

How to prioritize among these needs is a tough question and a lot will depend on how the players fall and whether we do some trading up or down..., but I'd be pretty surprised if we didn't end up with 6 players at these positions.

We have lots of stop gap players right now at several key positions. We filled up our holes with short term players but all of a sudden got old.

2018 is going to look very different than 2017. So basically we got one year to really try and get some youth at these positions. This is a very important draft because it's quite deep and we can infuse some nice talent to our core if we have a good draft.

RB: Stewart will need to restructure or he will probably get released next year.

DE: CJ and Pep might be gone

S: Adams might be gone

We also need to start thinking about our Olsen, Kalil replacements because they are getting up there. I know you all are thinking that's 3-4 years away but we thought the same thing about Gross...

I know I've said it before, but Tyler Larsen was quite the surprise last season.  I don't know if he has the upside to become a true Kalil replacement for the future, but I certainly am a lot more comfortable with our depth at C than I was a year ago.  Wouldn't that be an amazing story if he proves a long-term solid replacement for Matt [oops: Ryan of course] eventually.  If he ends up as #2 on our depth chart, he'll get a chance to work a lot more closely with Matt [Ryan, DUH] and the 1st string.  Looking forward to seeing how that goes...

As far as TE, even if you might not need to "replace" Greg yet, the idea of being able to do two TE sets with a really solid #2 TE who's a great receiver gets floated around here alot and yet we don't see it happen on the field.  I keep wondering if having a very good #2 TE could be part of the offensive evolution being talked about.

*EDIT:  DANG.  I know Ryan is Center and Matt is OT.  REALLY I do.  Just have Matt Kalil on the brain and have been training myself to type Matt instead of Ryan recently when thinking "Kalil" - today it came back to bite me!

“We’re going to look to do a little more backfield sets in terms of two backs and 12 personnel with the extra tight end as the lead blocker. We’ve got to get guys like Jonathan Stewart rolling. We’ve got to put it in our backs’ hands and get the ball to our playmakers."

Above is Rivera's statements about the direction he wants to see the offense go.  More two TE sets and another primary back that can carry the load. Last thing he mentioned was getting the ball to our playmakers. So which highly rated prospects can help the running game (as a runner or lead blocker) and can break a game wide open: OJ Howard and Leonard Fournette.

Rivera also mentioned in an interview about wanting a complete defensive end that can play all 3 downs. Here it gets murky, obviously if Garrett was in play he would be the no.1 player on the board. They could also consider Solomon Thomas (Charlie Casserly said he is a 3-4 DE and we now Gettleman removes players from his  board if he considers them 3-4 DE or OLB) and Jonathan Allen.

I don't have any  Rivera comments about safety but I know they would like a long term answer to the position and I don't believe they consider Boston to be the solution.

As you said it all depends on how the draft falls and how these guys are rated on the Panthers board but I am hopeful we get a future pro bowler/all pro at 8.

I see we are already mixing up our Kalil's. Only a matter of time hahaha.

And I agree with your assessment on the 2 TE sets. That is where Cam excelled his rookie year. I feel like that would benefit him tremendously.

We want to run. Having 2 TEs that can block and catch would be huge.

I also feel better about Larsen. Had no clue about him but was pleasantly surprised. Our next Norwell!
