Report: Panthers Have Interest In McCaffery As Their 8th Pick

After reading this in another post, I am not surprised. When we hired Taylor as our WR coach I thought we'd grab him at 40, but it's now the glaring consensus that he'll never last to 40, so why not... runs well, catches well, helps ST?

30:10 - RB Christian McCaffery - The Safest Runningback From The Class

In this segment, they begin talking about Christian McCaffery, and how he's arguably the safest pick in the draft. They go back to that interesting analogy of comparing these runningbacks to 2008, and how McCaffery would've probably been in 2017 Fournette's shoes in being a boom or bust prospect in that age's NFL. In the modern NFL, McCaffery is the safest pick of them all.

His versatility and ways NFL offenses can weaponize him makes him all the more valuable. From being your receiving threat, your occasional blocking RB, to your ground-game pure runner, McCaffery can do it all. They talk about that versatility and how Stanford's offense made him prepared to be NFL-ready from the get-go. With Stanford running a pro-style scheme, McCaffery is likely able to slide in any team's situation and dominate.

What he does best is getting in between the tackles, then being the skinny dude in the second level and getting those yards. He may never be your power back that you use to snatch those short yards, but he'll be your elusive, twitchy guy. They talk about how well he compares to Brian Westbrook, and how he could honestly be a better version of Reggie Bush's hype. McCaffery has a ton of talent and ways to use him, and they argue how he's the second best back from the draft easy.

I don't get it. Aren't you the guy that is always saying you don't want Fournette because we won't evolve the offense with him as the pick?

So what, now you don't want someone who would force them to do that?

He just doesn't want a RB at no. 8.

I don't see why we would want to use are number one pick doing special teams as well. That's a good way to get ur guy hurt is playing him at so many positions. That's why I'm kinda against it, I rather a full time player at one position.

Thing is we had Ted Ginn Jr playing returner and WR. McCaffrey is likely to switch from RB to WR. If we do pick him at least we know Ron Rivera is trying to actually do something with the offense.

Switching to WR.

He may play out of the slot some, but he will be a RB.

Sure what I should say is he will switch between running the ball and catching the ball. In other words playing the role of a RB or a WR. Of course not actually playing both positions.

Strangely enough, I'm starting to wonder if Shula is actually capable, and our personnel wasn't......

We know what Cam and Olsen can do, and he made them shine two years ago...the rest I'm not as high on...outside of a healthy Stew.

Saying he fills 2 or 3 roles for us is bs smith was great in the return game but caught on the wr role his presence in the return game dwindled down this is not college when a player become valuable at one position then they will not risk injury playing multiple positions. That's why I think he is not the long term answer for RB however he would be good in the slot with a qb with a quick release like saints or pats that's just not cams strong point. So if you want a slot Ross would be ideal at 8 if Adams and LF are gone not really sold on Howard yet. It's gonna be fun to watch it unfold regardless.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
