When Ron was in San Diego, they used a lot of screen passes to make other defensive coordinators think twice about blitzing.  Screen passes are also deadly against edge rushing defenses. QB usually gets rid of football within 2 seconds on screen plays.

Big advantage on screen plays?  Our massive WRs and their blocking.

Problem is we let our best blocking WR in Philly go... KB holds and both him Funch don't go all out blocking on run plays, they tend to take half the play off.

CM is tailor made to catch screens from Cam from the HB, slot, and even the WR position. Good video. I've had college D-lineman tell me nothing slows down the pass rush like a good screen pass.

True, since he's been a RB coach and they do more blocking than WR. But it was in college and college backs aren't asked to block or learn it nearly as much as in the NFL. But it could also be that KB and Funch aren't willing learners. They've both seemed lazy at times. Coach can't be on the field and force them to not take part of a play off.

 

Another thought. Shep who we brought in to upgrade and replace Philly is clearly improving as a receiving threat and is a top ST guy already. But can he block too? No idea but if he can that makes that signing look even better.

I'm really interested in seeing how often stewart and mccaffrey are in the backfield together. I'm no oc but I can see all kinds of possibilities if shula can figure out screens

Pure speculation on my part but Kelvin seemed out of shape last year (understandable with the knee), harder to hold a good block when you're exhausted.
