Voth: Proehl didn't really push receivers

If I was making millions of dollars to play a game, I sure wouldn't need a coach to force me to lay off the Whoppers and take my career seriously. No.excuses.

I think most of us regular folk would agree.

But it's also true that our culture coddles and caters to people with great talent, like star athletes. So much so that by the time they get to the pros, a lot of these guys have gotten very used to getting whatever they want.

Can you teach a work ethic to someone who is not used to having one?

Not surprised at all. I'd been saying for awhile that I felt like most Panthers fans vastly overrated Proehl as a coach. No receiver we drafted noticeably improved under him. I'm not so sure that his "retirement" was by choice.

Oh, I don't doubt that his retirement was voluntary.

But as to performance, bear in mind that the guy in charge of Proehl's employment is known as a "player's coach".

Yeah I tried to point this out 6 months ago and how not one receiver had gotten the slightest bit better under Proehl, but people just couldn't believe that. People need to realize: just because someone has a familiar name doesn't mean they're any good.

Would love @Jeremy Igo take on this as well.  I really liked Proehl but did seem he got just a little to soft the last few seasons and you could tell with some of these guys like KB and Funchess.  They both have it in them, they look damn good in camp from reports.  But just seem to need help lighting a fire under their azz.

Im still not familiar with the new coach and his personality

He was definitely a player friendly coach. Nothing wrong with that and can be very effective. Tony Dungy comes to mind in his manner on the field.

In the end his guys did not develop as well as the team would like. But, it should be noted, the same was the case in Tampa Bay when Shula was OC. Difficult for a receiver to excel under Shula.

I hate the fact that today's generation always has to have an excuse for everything, and there is no accountability.

Blame their parents. I know that everyone blames today's generation but who raised them? The generation that raised them wants to blame others for what they created.

Consider though, that Taylor is used to working with Christian McCaffrey, whose work ethic is said to be really good.

Would Taylor be okay with others not putting in as much effort as his star pupil?

Cam supposedly has a good work ethic. Doesn't mean he shouldn't be or doesn't need to be pushed by coaches. Basically what I'm saying is players having good work ethics isn't the same as being pushed by coaches.

And....thank you for making my point.

I think Rivera hires coaches like Proehl, which is a flaw of Rivera's in my opinion. Not a huge deal, but I feel Cam would benefit from having a QB coach who pushes him harder than Dorsey, and the whole offense would benefit more from having an OC who gets pissed at players when they f*ck up and makes sure they don't do it again. Shula seems afraid of doing that. Never once have I seen him in a player's face. Lots of screw ups, very little discipline or real consequences for the players screwing up. Rivera's actually decent at it despite being a "player's coach." But considering his family's military background, this isn't surprising. Same on the defensive side, though I think Wilks is a much tougher and stricter coach than McD was. Also with players like Ealy and Boston, I think the coaching has been at least some part of their departures this offseason. Gettleman has to come in and be the guy laying down the law in these two cases. If the coaches had done it more often and earlier maybe these two would've come closer to reaching their potential, and would still be here and DG wouldn't have to be the "parent" here.

That's all for my rant right now...

Good point. It's just hard for me to picture him going off though. He just looks so damn mild mannered, lol.
