MMQB All-time draft - 3 current Panthers make "top 300 players"* of all time

* IMPORTANT NOTE:  This is not "top 300 players" irregardless of position.  12 analysts went through 25 rounds of a mock draft to compile 12 rosters of 25 players from the pool of all NFL players throughout history.  Thus they could only draft 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs ... EACH.

----------------

As a fun break from all the DG vs. Hurney angst...

I spent some time browsing the MMQB's all-time draft.  Fun stuff.  (Apologies if it's already been posted... I did a search and did see it.)

https://si.com/specials/mmqb-nfl-all-time-draft/draft-results.html

Reggie White (who was only with the Panthers one season, so doesn't really count as a Panther so much) is the highest Panthers pick - in the top 10.

3 current Panthers players make the list!  I'll let you all click on the link to discover who.  (Luke is obvious... 2 & 3 a bit less so.)

I was surprised how high Luke went.  Above a bunch of HoF guys, including Kevin Greene.  WAY above Urlacher too.

Based on his numbers Peppers should at least be in the top 100. SMH. Cam Newton is not on there?  Doesn't he have a million broken NFL records?  Dumb list is going to be dumb.

Only 12 QBs drafted for the 12 teams by each of the analysts.  So, no surprise that Cam is off the list.  Drew Brees was not picked, nor Bart Starr for goodness sakes...

12 QBs drafted (in order) were:

Unitas (#3)

Brady (#9)

Otto Graham (#10)

Montana (#11)

Elway (#12)

Staubach (#13)

Peyton Manning (# 20)

 Bradshaw (#52)

Rodgers (#89)

Favre (#110)

Marino (#115)

Aikman (#234)

Cam is not quite in that company YET!  A couple rings and a few more seasons like 2015 and he could well be.  After all his stats for first 5-6 years compare really well with Peyton.  He's beaten a bunch of Montana records already....

No Peppers?

I'm not his biggest fan because I'm still butthurt, I admit it, but the dude is top 5 sacks all time. Why he ain't on the list?

I agree this is a surprise...

I guess the analysts drafting were trying to avoid "recency bias"... but still.

No offense to Greg Olsen, and he is great.  Cam deserves to be above him.  Cam is the most important player on this team, and the best player this franchise has had.  He has done things no other quarterback has done in NFL history, and is still relatively young.

See my edited comment about QBs above.

Rules were each of the 12 teams could only draft 1 QB.  So only 12 QBs picked.  Cam is not among the top 12 QBs of all time, yet.

This is not the 300  best players of all time irregardless of positions.  It was 12 analysts competing to draft the best team among all players ever in the NFL.  So they had to draft to fill a full roster of 22 starters (and I think a few specialists too?).  1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 2 tackles, a kicker, a punter, etc.

Okay now it makes sense, and I can see that.  Thanks for giving me the information.  Still cool that 3 current players are on there.

Yes, in hindsight the way I presented the topic "300 top players" was confusing.  I've now edited the original post to make the parameters clearer.  Thanks for the feedback!

    • 19. Lomu OT 51. Golday LB 83. Wheatley S 119. Allar QB 156. Fisher LB   This is the way.
    • It's still CJ by a wide margin.  BY has closed the gap, but the gap is still considerably large.  Let's not forget CJ was without basically ALL of his weapons in this last game against the Patriots, and I'm pretty sure he had an injury.  BY lost to that same Pats team by like 40 points.  In fairness, a good bit of that was due to the defense.  That said, BY was completely incapable of keeping us in the game.  Mistake free football does not always equal good football.  He still had a bad game.
    • Playing QB in this league is tough.  I can't hate on a man's work ethic without knowing exactly what it is.  From everything I've read about him, I seriously doubt his work ethic has dropped.  He had 2 concussions in 2 years, has his OL downgraded, got a different OC, and lost his best weapons due to injury in these short 2 years after his rookie year.  Throw that in with teams having more film on him and the drop-off makes sense.  Maybe he needs to change what he does in the offseason to adapt better, but I doubt he has an issues with work ethic.
