Kelvin Benjamin - Ron Rivera confirms weight loss

This Morning on WFNZ Ron Rivera confirmed that Kelvin Benjamin returned to Training Camp at 243. This is very close to the weight we drafted him at. He's definitely lighter than last year. In fact, he's lighter than Greg Olsen who I believe is right around 250.

I'm very excited about Christian McCaffrey and what these other speedy guys will be able to do in the open field. But what it means for Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen is "one on one" opportunities. And even when KB is struggling, his size makes him a nightmare for DB's one on one.

I'm glad he put a number to it because some people continue to assume that KB is heavier than that. I was never really worried about him but it would definitely be better if he would get a little more fanatical about his off season conditioning though. Time after time, we see HOF inductees who were fanatical about their conditioning and preparation. That's what separates guys in this league because they all have talent.

I'm still fully of the opinion, however, that as a professional athlete (especially a professional football player at a skill position) its never a good thing to ride the weight roller coaster in the off-season.

I'm glad KB is looking svelte (for his size) and that he reported to camp in condition.  Now what he needs to do in the future is to maintain that condition in the off-season, instead of letting go and living it up and then "getting back down" when August rolls around.

Oh give it a rest. He looks great.

Besides, come September you'll be guzzling beer and stuffing greasy food down your throat all in the name of watching grown men pummel each other into the ground. Please spare me your commentary about another man "living it up".

"Weight roller coaster" is fine if you have it under control which KB seems to. KB typically balloons up during offseason but gets back down so there is no issue.

I know I allow my weight to fluctuate 20 pounds from winter to summer. KB is a big boy and for him to stay that thin year round isn't realistic. People don't realize unless they do it just how exhausting (mentally and physically) cutting weight and maintaining a low weight is. So if KB can come in for 6 months and be in game shape he can do whatever the f*ck he wants the other 6 imo.

I think this is one of the things that has me so hyped about McCaffrey.  Coaches and veteran players (like Luke) are talking about his incredible dedication and true Pro-level preparation,  In spite of all the time he missed during OTAs, he came in READY.  He shows something special in that area alone...

KB has a lot to prove this year.  His lack of effort last year was appalling and after a poor year shows up to OTAs overweight and we're all suppose to rejoice that he is down to 243?!?  I have no idea what his normal weight is and hopefully he has a huge year but we should never have to discuss a weight problem for any professional athlete.  Amazing to me that folks around here actually defend a professional athlete for not being able to stay in shape after he is compensated millions of dollars to stay in shape.

Which is pablum that has nothing to do with nor directly addresses my point.

Which is a direct, personal insult (something you've been doing a lot of lately which, I thought, was supposed to be treated more harshly) that has nothing to do with nor directly addresses my point.

    • He's not wrong though. You talk like a politician on here. Leaving yourself just enough wiggle room to say you never fully counted Bryce out if you need to....But we can all see it. Just say you think he is a bust outright and you will have to type a lot less. Obfuscating your opinion behind QB3 competitions etc....
    • Most EVs are in the 90+ e-MPG meaning some measurement house somewhere compares the EV to a similar ICE model and works out how much is costs to charge (on average) versus fill up as a point of comparison. Talking long term, in the hundreds of thousands of miles?  No clue.  Some early signs are that EV batteries maintain 80% charge over 400k miles.  So there's that.   The challenge and charm of an ICE vehicle is being able to park it under a tree, get your jack stands out and tinker with your engine.  There's just not that same level of complexity in an EV.  I saw someone estimate there are 200 or so moving parts in an EV, and 2000 in an ICE vehicle.  I'm not a part counter so I can't really speak to that. I think that the EV is more the future than any type of combustion engine.  Those will still be around in specific purposes, but for most people - an EV will be the superior option in terms of efficiency.  I say that as someone who loves stupid horsepower numbers out of turbo 4 bangers and inline 6s...  I am one of those tinkers when I can be. A bigger issue for EVs is going to be the ownership versus lease.  Right now, there are INSANE leases on EVs, which is great, but what do you have at the end of that lease?  Nada, maybe some equity if you're lucky.  Where as I'm almost done paying for my car, and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off (or my son wrecks it when he starts to drive).  Will EV makers do the smartphone thing and build in planned obsolesce?  Stop updating software?  I love the tech in EVs, and I think getting more cars and trucks off the road is a good thing.  But I am still just a little concerned.  Capitalism has gotten far too extractive.
