Why Deep To Moose

Jake Delhomme said the play can be effective.

“Sometimes teams have doubled Steve (Smith) so much,” Delhomme said. “We haven’t hit yet and that’s something we’re not going to stop trying. I overthrew it twice in the Philly game. In Dallas I probably tried to place it to him a little too much. He said he lost it. It’s something we’re going to keep trying.”

Hell, it seems like all of our passing routes take 5 seconds to run. I do agree with you on your point, sending Smitty deep would draw a safety over the top and open up some underneath stuff. Davidson should be DC, he has shut down the run game and Smitty for 3 weeks straight.

That is why Fox and Jake won't be here.....they will keep trying. Sure it is a bad play that totally goes against Moose's strengths and plays into his weaknesses as a WR.....but they will keep trying.

Some would say if put Kenny Moore in and run a 3 WR set if you want to go vertical to someone not named Smitty to catch a defense off-guard......Fox and Jake fart in the general direction of those so foolish to suggest it.

I read this too. WOW!!!! Haven't these two every heard of a 3 WR set? Why on earth would you keep calling a play that clearly doesn't work?

The fact that both these idiots (Fox and Hurney) will continue to try plays that obviously won't work is another reason I think both should be given their walking papers after this season. Pathetic!

forget 3 WR sets...you have 6 good receiving options, spread the ball to them.

smith, moose, williams, stewart, rosario, king. those guys are on the field most the time anyway, feed it to them. just spread that ball around to them earlier.

when hoover's back in, get him involved as a receiver more. they've got goodson, throw him in the mix.

just get more receiving options involved.

    • Absolutely. He just turned 27 a few days ago, so quite young. He and Moehrig would be quite the pairing.  I know we say this every year, but this FA period has A LOT of talent that will be switching uniforms. We were aggressive last year and have no doubt this time next week will have some studs on defense.
    • DJ Moore has always been a bit of an enigma. He came here young, flashed a ton of potential, but never truly grew into a real #1. He’s had a few good reasons, but yet to have a real monster season (outside of his first year with Chicago) We’re still waiting for him to blossom, but he will be 29 next season. I fear that it is too late for him at this point.
    • I have considered free agency.  LT?  Either not good enough or too expensive.  Besides, this is a good OT draft.  (I would rather have a free agent, mind you, but the Panthers' reality suggests we can't do it without neglecting other positions).  What LTs are available in free agency, and what do you expect to pay?  Any Ickey-level OT is going to cost over $20m.   How much do we already have invested in our OL?  I get your point, but I do not think you can spend over $100m per on your OL. We have 2 guards and a right T who pull in about $75m per season.  We don't have a center yet.  Teams just don't let good LTs hit free agency, and when one does on rare occasion, he is expensive.  If you want a third of the Panther cap going to 5 Offensive Linemen, free agency is the way to go.  We still need S, ILB, Edge, WR, etc. I think we'd need more than Nijman--and I would understand if we went free agent for a T--but that is putting a TON of your cap at OL--so considering our situation, I do not see that option as preferable.  You may disagree. If I was not talking LT on our line and thinking about the cap, I would agree 100%.
