Kicking choice is "a fluid process"

Hurney...

The Panthers took some calls about Graham Gano before the deadline to set their 53-man roster, but they didn’t make a trade and they kept both Gano and seventh-round pick Harrison Butker while making other cuts.

On Sunday, General Manager Marty Hurney said it was a “fluid process” while discussing when the team will make its choice about which kicker will be on the roster for the long term. That may mean the Panthers are still trying to work a trade involving one kicker or the other in order to get something back for opening the roster spot.

Rivera...

“I’m leaning toward the experienced guy,” Rivera said, via the Charlotte Observer. “Graham really had a pretty good camp. I know we’d have loved to have seen him make that last one. But he’s had an outstanding camp.”

“That last one” was a 51-yard field goal in last Thursday’s game that Gano put off an upright, one of two misses for the veteran in the preseason. Butker was 2-of-2 on field goals this summer and Rivera said he’d like to see the rookie on the practice squad if they do ultimately go with Gano, although it’s not a sure thing that he’d get through waivers.

"I'm leaning toward the experienced guy" could be a virtual mantra for Rivera.

That's not to say that Ron never chooses the younger option. The unfortunate truth though is that it when it comes to personnel, whichever option he chooses tends to be the wrong one.

I can't take anymore of this limp dick coaching staff.  They can't make the hard choices because they are job scared which is ironic as lack of clear decision making is usually what gets one fired.

I have zero faith that this crew can deliver a playoff caliber team much less a SB contender.

Yeah, I have to say, Gettleman's "nothing is owed" style is sorely missed in this moment.  There were obviously a lot of things I disagreed with him on, but man...  this should not be this hard.

And I haven't spoke a lot on the QB situation, but being that saga mentioned it, that is even further evidence of roster mismanagement by Hurney.  Webb was what he was.  He wasn't a superhero, but he was a hard worker, versatile, and could fill multiple roles really well on your roster, all while being a pretty good backup QB if you ever needed him.  So, we kept DA, who regressed last season, then stunk it up all preseason, and we cut the QB behind him who outplayed him, can cover kicks, and play receiver lol?  All so we could bring in an UDFA to "develop" on the active roster?  We have Cam.  Why do we need to develop a young guy who won't play?  Smh...  sorry, didn't mean to derail.

You can never convince me keeping 3 QBs and 2 kickers on the 53 is a good thing.

Remind me again, which pro bowlers did we cut in order to carry a 3rd QB and 2nd kicker as players 52 & 53 on the roster?

If Hurney feels he can get something for either kicker it's better to hang on to him than dump him. Especially when Gettleman has already set him back a step without a 4th next year.

Nick Novak was cut by the Texans. He had a far superior 2016 to Gano. Why would anyone trade for a kicker who had a crappy year when Lambo and Novak are available? Cut Gano.

Is Austin Sefarian-Jenkins any good? Apparently he was a 2nd round TE before being cut by the Jets...

Yeah, I mentioned in another thread about it that we had leverage if we were looking to trade one of the kickers BEFORE the cutdown.  Now, we have none.  Teams know its more trouble for us to try to keep both rather than just let one go, and they know we actually want to let one go...  And as you mentioned, there were more reliable options that were released to the market after cuts, so why would they trade for one of ours?

Hurney, or Ron, or whomever you chose to believe is responsible for this mess has no intention of trading one of these kickers.  They simply can't decide on which one to keep so they will keep them both and maybe cut one later after Ganos salary is fully guaranteed this year.  Which means they will keep Gano.

I'm not so sure that's true. They did cut Joe Webb, which was harder than cutting any kicker. I doubt we will carry two kickers for very long anyway.

I had always been under the impression that this team was managed and coached by football professionals.

Imagine my surprise when I found out its actually being managed/coached by indecisive teenage girls.

That's not a ringing endorsement for a good "tough" decision.  If anything they should have cut both DA and Webb and kept Gilbert on until they developed another QB.  But I'm not confident that this team can develop a QB so it's a moot point.
