Kicking choice is "a fluid process"

Then why is he still making the same coaching mistakes he made as a rookie?

That's a sweeping generality. Coaches do have certain patterns, but to suggest that he is exactly the same coach just isn't true. It's not like he hasn't had success over the years, which is somewhat phenomenal considering some of the things he's had to deal with.

- Bad (sometimes awful) clock management

- Slow starts (in both games and seasons)

- Poor - or lack of - adjustments

- Flat second half performance (tying into the above)

- Frequent penalties

- Teams lacking discipline

So do we give Ron as much room to correct these issues as we gave Michael Vick to learn the West Coast offense?

Forgot gutless.  The decision not to go for it on 4th and short in Oakland was the death knell to our playoff hopes in 16.

Just like there have been examples of the above, there are counterexamples to the above.

And there have been times when Marty Hurney made good draft picks.

The problem is that there are far more examples of bad than good.

Team Discipline? Other than 2011 his team's have been in the better half of least penalized teams. Several years well within the top 10

We've had loads of penalties that came at absolutely the wrong time, especially on special teams.

Just FTR, I wanted them to find a way to get Jim Harbaugh here. You watch, he will have Michigan competing for championships in no time. They are already in the top 15 after being mediocre, at best, for the last 20 years or so. I don't know exactly what he did to rub management the wrong way in San Francisco, but the man can  coach his ass off. I'm sure JR would have hated him though.

Scot has an answer for everything. He has been low-key calling for Rivera's head through the bad times, as well as the good. There's nothing anyone can say to change his mind.

I'm starting to see where he's coming from on Rivera and have to agree.   Rivera may be a great defensive mind but he is woefully lacking in player evaluations and will always need a competent GM to keep him from himself.

He's too inconsistent with game management and strategy to be a consistent winner.  He's been given enough talent to contend for a SB but he can't put together back to back winning seasons.

Having said that, as long as JR controls this team this is what you're going to see.  Keep players happy and don't make waves and you'll be alright.  If they win great, if not, there's always next year.

Rivera has been one of the best defensive coordinators in the business.

He does not have the skill set to be a head coach.

That's been true of a lot of great defensive minds over the years (Dick LeBeau, Wade Phillips and others) and some great offensive coaches as well.

Rivera is as nice a guy as you could find. I certainly don't have any bad feelings toward him. I just don't feel he's a good enough head coach to win championships.

It's becoming painfully obvious that he doesn't have it and will never have it.  Not taking a stand when Cam was being head hunted really spoke volumes to his leadership ability.

I lost a lot of respect for Rivera during the whole head hunting ordeal Cam went through.  Instead of coming to the defense of his QB he tucked tail and towed the company line.  But I digress.

Ron is what he is.  He will need a great OC and competent GM to keep him employed anywhere but Carolina.

If Rivera doesn't have it, then I guess a lot of coaches don't have it because his record is certainly better than theirs. He is not too far off some of the more notable and accomplished names historically.

My thing is that continuity does stand for something. The Steelers know that lesson well, and that's one of the reasons they're always competitive and have more rings than anyone else.

No one is perfect, and there is much worse than Rivera. I strongly disagree that Rivera has had a great situation, much less a perfect one, that warranted expectations of a Super Bowl, but yet and still he got the team there, and may have finished the deal hadn't we had glaring weaknesses that bit us in the ass, uncharacteristic turnovers and injuries. He has arguably overachieved considering the deficiencies he's had with personnel.
