Do players really "care" as much as fans do?

Do players really get pissed about getting embarrassed 3 weeks in a row or do they simply check their bank account, hot girlfriend, nice car and care less? It is apparent that some players simply mail it in when they get paid (Gamble, Peppers, Delhomme) while others pick it up when it is time to get paid (Davis). Is it truly all about the money to these guys?

Not for all players. Beason said he won't even go into town right now because he doesn't want people to think everything is ok with him when it's FAR from ok with him. That's why it's ok for my wife to sleep with him if given the chance. Plus, maybe I could then raise my darkly tanned son to grow up and be really good at football. Then I'm cruisin' on easy street.

Like others have said I think it depends on the guy. Folks like Gamble and Peppers don't seem to get too pissed. Even Williams always seems to be smiling.

But then you have guys like Jake, Steve, Beason, Davis who seem to get very emotional. I don't know that most of them mail it in as they all know they can be replaced pretty easily but some lets their emotions show more than others.

It seems to be a mixed bag. Guys on defense showing emotion seems to spur them on and make them more aggressive which can be a good thing.. Guys on offense being overly emotional seems to make them more prone to mistakes.

I'll never forget the look on Deangelo's face towards the end of that Dallas game as he sat on the bench, alone.

There are players who don't of course. Fans know who those players are too.

Its just like my work. Yes I get paid; and it is just a job; but, hell yes, I care about my coworkers and I do care about what my peers think of me as a person and a professional.

Well, I think most players care to a certain degree either way. Even if they don't care, most of them give a lot of effort (hey, they want to keep their job too).

Actually, I think the "care-o-meter" represents a parabola; rookies probably care more because they want to do well, don't have tons of money and love the game (they just got in!). However, if they make it a few years and are starting to get comfortable (money wise, and this isn't always true anyway), they probably lose some of their drive. But, as they make it towards the end of their career, they probably are (hopefully) so comfortable financially that the only reason they are playing is because they love the game.

That's my basic theory, at least.

      this one is gold:     Bryce has a cult inside the Panthers fanbase that has truly developed some NPC hivemind. I'll never understand how he's captured the true essence of the casual fan like that.
