What If... Marty Just Did Something That Will Make You Love Him?

so we weren't in cap hell for years and years...

I do not want to jump into this boring argument by any means. I just want to inject a little common sense here. Yes, we were in cap hell for years and years. That can't be denied. If you paid attention before now, you would know. What you're looking at are b&w numbers at season's end without any context. Hurney loved big contracts. Then, every year, until 2011, he would renegotiate those same contracts to stay under the cap and free up money to spend. That's how Hurney made it all look good. Every year. Did players have much choice? No. I'm sure it was, if you want the team to win, accept less pay this year, for the sake of the team. He used the players like they were banks. Then in 2011 came the new CBA and suddenly a contract could not be renegotiated year after year after year. A rookie and vet pay scale was instituted. That's when the cap hits started to be seen and it was obvious Hurney was not the "cap wizard" he claimed to be. Delhomme was never overpaid. His compensation was pushed back year after year after year until, at the time he was cut, he was owed a large sum of guaranteed money.

Two things that Gettleman avoided. Renegotiating contracts because he structured them correctly to begin with. He had a long term plan. And signing FA's to high ball one year contracts. His were always at least 2 years and avoided high ball payouts. He believed in analytics, a 'show me you're worth more' approach. Vets I saw signed were mostly former 1st round draft picks that got a chance to prove themselves again. And that is one reason why the locker room was so tight in 2015.

Only time will tell, but I understand the notion that two possession receivers like Funchess & Benjamin were bogging the offense down. We're trying to execute a vertical passing game with big/slow guys who can't separate down field. Losing Ginn really brought the problem into focus this year, Ginn would take the top off and open things up underneath (including the running game). There was also a financial consideration here, we were going to have to pay Kelvin to keep him and we have a younger, cheaper, healthier version of him in Funchess. Bills came along offering decent trade compensation and we pulled the trigger.

The question is if Shepard, Samuel and Clay are ready to step up and pose enough of a threat to make defenses back off. Rivera said we were getting zero blitz on 2nd & 8 which is a clear sign that nobody respected our speed at WR.

so.....we should of included Stewart in the KB deal too huh.

I think Stewart definately has a role on this team.  A valuable one.  Both as a leader and as a short yardage dude.  But I don't think the Panthers can simply not pointlessly run him in scenarios where he has little shot at success over and over and over.

I think others have been correct when they stated he needs to be put in for goal line situations, with CAP and CMC getting the majority of the work out of the backfield.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
