According to NFL.com, Panthers are #1 Defense in Average Yards Allowed Per Game

We just need to create some better pressure and more turnovers. There were a lot of times yesterday where Matt Ryan had ALL day to throw. That won't fly come playoff time against even better QBs. And the lack of turnovers will right itself. I feel a regression (progression?) to the mean coming and a bunch of big turnover games for us. Our defense is too good not to.

We could be first in points allowed per game if our offense could have protected the ball the first half of the season. Defense had shorter fields on average when playing us. Which could also contribute to not allowing many yards. When opposing offenses don’t have to travel a full 50 yards for 15 points (like the Eagles), they tend not to gain many yards........know what I mean.

there are 3 first round linebackers

there are 2 first round defensive linemen

plus a slew of stud second rounders

turns out if you spend high draft picks consistently on a unit the unit performs well.

Cam  1st

Stew  1st

CMC  1st

Kalil 1st

Olsen 1st

KB 1st

And a slew of seconds

turns out if you spend.......nevermind

Matt Kalil was a FA and he's complete trash.

Olsen was a trade and he wasn't playing today.

KB is no longer on the team.

Stew was drafted a decade ago.

CMC is useless.

I guess Devin is a second.

The Panthers have found very good value in the interior line, and it looks like Williams is a player at RT. But this team has consistently prioritized defense in the draft, especially the front seven, since 2001.

Yeah cool they spent a first rounder on a QB and made a bad pick on a gadget player. Doesn't change a thing.

The broncos are the perfect team to illustrate how little stats matter. They are 2nd overall in defense by yards given up per game.  They are 25th overall in defense by points per game allowed.  Just goes to show how significant the affect of turnovers and short fields is.

No it shows you that PPG is the only defensive stat that matters.

Yea not sure what that guys non point was bringing up players we don't pick/aren't on team anymore.

If we're doing that then that's 4 first round LBs alone cuz we'll just add in Beason. 4 first round LBs in 10 years.....lul...actually from 2005-2015 it is still 4 in 10 so re edit the edit.

Also the other thing to keep in mind is that the Panthers offense is primarily designed to keep the defense fresh. Ron rivera probably doesn't care that his offense can't score points because it still leads the league in time of possession. Devin and Benjamin were drafted in part because they were huge blockers that could help run out the clock. poo, if there's anything the Panthers offense is good at its waiting until the last possible second to snap the ball. Gotta give Luke those extra seconds on the sideline!

It's an absolutely unthinkable way to play football in 2017. The rules have slanted so far towards the offense it's borderline unfair, and the Panthers are still trying to build the 85 bears.

case in point, end of the game yesterday. Panthers have the ball with 2:30 left, Falcons have one or two timeouts, I can't remember.

Basically they get two first down and the game is over.

But you could see it in Ron's eyes. He wanted to punt that ball back and let the defense go for it so freaking bad. It was 2012 all over again.

Stew + Otah :(

Once again many wanted Forte which makes it even worse since we traded the first....FFS I don't miss those stupid Hurney trades....

The pick was going to be Clady, who went the pick before Stewart.

The pick that we traded to get back in for Otah? Used to pick Forte.

Well of course...which is exactly what I posted about 25 seconds after I made this post.  The Panthers defense is 4th in points allowed...pretty darn good.  It is our net points that suck...gotta get that offense rolling.  Hopefully we can build off of this Sunday.

Yup....we had 4 picks in the top 75 in 2008

When you look at the players that went in the top 75 that year and you realize Hurney could have established a dynasty here with that draft alone. rofl it's so funny it's sad.
