A Breakdown of Matt Kalil’s Improving Play (gif loaded)

Before Mr.Saca cuts up another one of Vinny’s articles, give it a click and a full read.

Vinny, is a writer for the Riot Report and does a lot of good work.

If Kalil can just be serviceable, it makes Cam’s life so much easier. We saw what Cam was capable of with a serviceable LT in 2015 with Oher.

That's the best and most informative breakdown I've seen from RR.

It is so crazy how everything feeds off of each other.  With the improved run game that forces defenses to be on the field longer, makes them more tired, and also doesn't allow them only to focus on pass rush.

Also, that LASER from cam to shepard was amazing.

There is such things as good games, bad games and average games. If a player has a good/great game, he is awesome turned the corner etc. If he has a bad game, people will say he sucks and needs to be replaced... etc. He has played better that last two weeks. Coming off another injury maybe it took him time to get his playing condition back.

Whoa FreeFua not bitching or whining. I just clocked out for my lunch break to come on here and saw pigs flying outside.

Just promise me you’ll continue to look at them pigs from inside where it’s safe, the world can be a cruel place on people like you.

I think maybe it took time for the line to gel.  I think with Ryan being out made this take longer than it should..By no means to I think everything is okay now, the o line needs to be addressed in the off-season if we are to have consistent success.

Wait, I’m sorry but Kalil hasn’t improved at all. He’s been blocking this well all year but now that KB is gone, Kalil doesn’t worry about the corner blitz every play since the CB covering KB knows he’s so slow that he can blitz and easily get back to cover KB before the ball gets there. Shepard commands such respect that now Kalil only thinks about his real blocking assignment.

Or so I’ve been told. ;)

Haha, we never disagreed on whether the Oline improved or not, we disagreed on the reason behind it.

But truthfully it probably was a little of both, a little bit of just random timing of marked improvement, and a little bit more speed on the field.

Agreed. I do think there are some that hate KB enough that think it is 100% his fault like he was a cancer. I just watch Shepard clearly show he’s not anywhere near KB’s level as a WR and now Samuel gone, I am not happy that we don’t have another “real” WR behind Funchess. Love that Funchess has stepped up, although again some of that is timing. Really young guy needed a couple years of seasoning. KB leaving didn’t make him better either, he was already showing it. Now that the OL seems like they are gelling (having your LT get it is huge, let’s Norwell and TE do their jobs better), having KB would be a good thing IMHO. That said he’s not so we need another WR to step up. Just worried we don’t have one, so maybe more two TE sets.

yeah, it really sucks that Samuel went down. Yeah in a 1:1 comparison between Shep and KB, there is no comparison.  But as far as fit and role, I can see why the Panthers made the deal.

It's not that KB isn't talented, it's that having him and funch on the field together wasn't working.  If they were planning on not picking up the option and moving on in off-season anyway, then it made perfect sense and has helped the offense

    • The last child @ home has told me he wants to go to a game, so we're seeing vs Rams on the 30th
    • Did we really shut them down though? They had 369 yards of offense.   That is 9 more yards than they average per game and 53 more than we give up per game this year.   If a team gave up 369 yards per game on defense, they'd be the 7th worst defense in the league this year. Yes, I will give our defense credit for having the 4th down stand near our goal line as well as creating the fumble that stopped their first drive, as they did rise to the occasion then, but even the INT was just a ridiculous play/throw and handed it to us and they also missed a FG. We didn't force them into a single punt all game.  We had 1 sack on a QB who had 37 pass attempts. They had drives of 56, 49, 50, 43, 58, and 71 yards (while we only had 2 over 40 yards ourselves). We bent, a lot, but never really broke, partially due to the Packers own mistakes, that's a far cry from "shutting them down" in my opinion.  Again, this is why I'm critical of us after a day like today, I'm able to look beyond a final score and evaluate how we played on the whole, and we keep squeaking out these wins despite not playing well at all.  And yes, that is what great teams do, but they also play well in the majority of their games, where as all we seem to do is squeak out ugly wins without ever playing all that well. I'm not saying I'm unhappy that we won, I've never once said anything like that, but when week after week I see serious concerns with how we played, then I'm going to call out what I see.
