Time frames relevant to ownership change

Following the usual process, new ownership would be expected to take control of the team around the middle of next year.  That means current interim GM Marty Hurney will probably be running free agency and the draft for the 2018 season.

Assuming the new owners don't keep Hurney, a new GM would likely be in place before the 2019 offseason.  It would then be up to them to evaluate the current roster and decide how to move forward with who to extend, and who to let go.

Barring further extensions prior to the 2019 offseason, here are the final contract years of some of the Panthers current starters relative to when new ownership and management will take over:

Source: Spotrac

2019 (One season remaining)

Mario Addison
Kurt Coleman
Shaq Thompson*
James Bradberry
Darryl Worley

2020 (Two seasons remaining)

Captain Munnerlyn
J.J. Jansen
Cam Newton

2021 (Three seasons remaining)

 Kawann Short
Luke Kuechly
Matt Kalil
Trai Turner

* A fifth year option could be added to Thompson's contract.

In addition to this, the following players have contracts that expire after next season.  Unless extended or re-signed prior to 2019 period, they would be free agents at the time when the transfer of power occurs:

Greg Olsen
Ryan Kalil
Charles Johnson
Jonathan Stewart
Thomas Davis
Devin Funchess
Mike Adams
Daryl Williams
Wes Horton
Fozzy Whittaker
David Mayo
Cameron Artis-Payne
Colin Jones
Kyle Love

How much the new GM will want to reshape the roster likely depends a lot on how he team and players perform next year and finishing out this year.

Also of note, head coach Ron Rivera is under contract through only the 2018 season.  Unless Hurney offers him an extension beforehand, the new ownership would be in a position to decide whether to extend his deal or move on to someone new.  They wouldn't be "firing" Rivera per se, just not extending him (basically what Lovie Smith did after his stint as Bears DC). Of course, even if Hurney did extend him, the new owners could still decide to replace him.  It would just cost more.

A new coach would mean a new system, which of course would factor heavily into roster decisions.

There's another aspect to this as well...

Between now and the time the new owners are in place, who's in charge?

Who decides whether contracts get extended, like Rivera's contract for example?

Would Marty Hurney have authority to make these decisions without an owner in place?

Is it possible that for a period here, Marty Hurney will be in charge of everything?

Oy.

Hopefully he's really only "interim" now.

Pretty much nobody believed that Richardson was actually gonna replace Hurney.

I just wish there was someway to get him out with JR.   Hell let Ron run the show until a new GM is hired.  I can't take anymore of Hurney no matter how insignificant his contribution is at the moment.   Just knowing he could and would screw it up if given the opportunity is worrisome enough for me.

Excellent information and data Mr. Scott.

The part that concerns me is the 'who' is in charge this coming offseason and the following. Two years worth of draft picks, free agent signings, trades and transactions.

2020 will come fast. In theory Cam plays well into his mid-thirties, but we've never seen a QB of his calibre, style of play and physical attributes. I can't see a situation where we don't resign him, but entering the 2021 season, he will be 31 and with a new regime in the fold, I wonder what our course will be. Especially with stalwarts like Kalil, Olsen, & JStew out of the offense.

As long as whomever is in place can evaluate talent in the draft and not make stupid signings in the offseason, we should be fine. I don't necessarily trust Hurney to do this. I think we are set pretty well for the next 2-3 years, but after that, we could look like what Seattle is coming to grips with this season.

Good stuff Scott.

You remind me of the guy at work that’s a little annoying at times but you always like him when you need something because he’s resourceful and normally helps you out of a tight spot.

Thanks...I think.

Might depend on whether a new GM extends Rivera.  Sans an extension, he'd be out as of 2019.

With coaching changes come new systems, and sometimes coaches and GMs want to build around their own guy.

I feel pretty safe that Newton is a Panther at least through the end of his current deal.  What happens after that depends on a load of variables.
