Week 17 Flex

PanthersATL

Recommended Posts

Still waiting to see if CARvsATL gets flexed from the 1p slot to either 4p or the night game..... 'cause there's nothing that any fan would want more than to be stuck in downtown Atlanta on NYE (with all the road closings for the Peach Drop etc etc around that part of town -- kinda blocks some highway access points).

But over on http://sports.morganwick.com/category/football/nfl/snf-flex-scheduling-watch/#sthash.U8T67GKG.dpbs , dude brings up a good point.

Flexing the game may not be feasible for one reason: the Peach Bowl is played at the MBDome the next day, and the staff need a certain amount of time to turn the signage/field/etc around from the NFL setup.   Can they do it in 13 hours?  Maybe... or maybe not.   They've had to deal with quick turnarounds before with no issue, but it still could be something that is considered in determining whether we'll get flexed or not.

That brings the possibilities down to a pair of games. One of them is a pretty sexy looking Panthers-Falcons matchup. The NFC South title could be on the line in Week 17 if the Falcons beat the Bucs on Monday Night Football this evening, and if they upset the Saints in Week 16. But if the Falcons lose one of those two games prior to the Panthers matchup, the game will lose some of its luster.

If the panthers and falcons win Sunday, it will most definitely be the flexed game.

If the panthers win and the falcons lose, I’m still betting it will be the 4:25 national game. They will play the saints-Bucs game at 1:00. If the Bucs were to pull the upset, the division would be on the line. If not, it would still essentially be a play in game for the falcons. Lose to us and they very well may be out.

The NFL doesn't care about NYE

They care about bottom line. Plenty of people would be doing New Year's Eve stuff instead of watching the game. Yeah probably not enough that it's better to leave all the games in the early slots but it'll be a factor in their ratings that night.

Or you can say more people will be out and about because of NYE therefore it's a prime TV slot.

    • generally speaking, going by the original NFL international marketing rights announcement... we would expect to host a Germany home game once every four years.  Doesn't mean we would play internationally only then, just the guarantee home game situation things might have changed since then, if they figure out how to play at more stadiums during a season to expand the number of "home" teams available
    • Munich won't happen. It's a Lions home game in Munich, but we play the Lions at home at BOA Most likely to happen would be Madrid vs the Falcons (although KC has been pushing hard for this one). From a schedule perspective, it would be interesting to have an early November Madrid game (then the bye week), then close out the season at BOA for the 2nd game vs the falcons.  In other words, put the two division games in the 2nd half of the season Paris vs the Saints has long been rumored to be the Browns (but... never say never) We wouldn't play Munich, Melbourne, Mexico City, London, or Rio based on who those announced home teams happen to be
    • Moton's knees were an issue before last season. He will be 32 before the season starts and gets 14.2M in '26 and 21.5M for '27 (not guaranteed). LT Icky and Rasheed Walker are signed through '26 and Freeling through '30 (option); LG Lewis signed through '28, C Fortner through '26 and Hecht through '29; RG Hunt through '28, RG Moton through '27.  They did a good job shoring up that oline.  We can have a starting oline of: LT Freeiling, LG Lewis, C Hecht, RG Hunt, and RT Moton pretty much locked up through the '27 season (will just take a Moton option to do). That's good because we need to be ready to pull the trigger with next year's QB class.
