Christmas has come and gone, New Years is on the way and Mr. Scot starting threads about Eric DeCosta and Marc Ross.  I cant tell if its 2006, 2011, 2013 or 2017

Some things never change around here

Off-season talk just before entering the playoffs. Some people aren't in to the game but the story lines I suppose.

fwiw, both rivera and gettleman were guys that kept getting interviews but didn't get hired until we did.

Yep. Patriots personnel guy Nick Caserio is another one like that.

People thought Gettleman was ruthless?  Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth if we hired someone from the Patriots system and he ran things the way they do up in Foxboro? Heck, Scott Pioli is out there too and we know he's a prick.

Peter King lists this year's top three GM candidates as Eliot Wolf (likely heir to the Packers gig) Joe Douglas (Eagles VP of Player Personnel) and George Paton (Vikings Assistant GM; interviewed here when we hired Gettleman).

Other names mentioned include Duke Tobin (Bengals Player Personnel guy), Brian Gutekunst (Packers guy who could be competing with Wolf to succeed Ted Thompson) Scott Fitterer (Trent Kirchner's co-director) Brian Gaine (just went to the Bills this past year) Joe Hortiz (Ravens director of scouting) and Terry McDonough (Cardinals, son of former NFL insider Will McDonough).

He has front office experience, but not as much as others.  I think there are better options.

Riddick always comes across as smart and knowledgeable when I see him on TV. I'd feel good about the move if the Panthers hired him, but I have no idea how good he would be.

Marc Ross, who just got passed over for the Giants GM job...again.

The Panthers certainly haven't had any issues hiring people who have been passed over before, and Ross fits the profile.

The problem: Hurney is under contract through June, and it'd be no shock if someone else hired Ross before our new GM search even gets started.

I thought I was opening a post about Ron Rivera.

I get that, but so did Matt Millen.

There are actually more than a dozen viable candidates currently working in the league, including one who interviewed with us already.

I just can't see taking a commentator who's been out of the league for years over one of those guys.

The major difference I see between Riddick and Millen is Riddick has previous front office experience. Millen went from player to booth (media) to GM. Riddick went player to scout to Director of Pro Personnel for the Eagles to TV (media).

Aaaaand Gettleman dismissed Marc Ross from the team. Ya think he hasn't been hired yet because he isnt that great?

Ross has had a pretty solid record, though there have been some hiccups of late (see above).

I know some will say some of his interviews were just Rooney Rule compliance, but Ross was getting interviews before the rule was extended to front office hires.
