  1. 1. Which GM will have more successful 2018 draft class?

Making the playoffs in 2014 was a product of how weak our division was, not of the team G-Man put together.  We were 7-8-1...we wouldn’t have made the playoffs in any other division that year.  Not even close.  It’s silly to give G-Man credit for that team.

Considering the financial hole Hurney left the team in it was amazing that the Panthers were as competitive as they turned out to be during Dave's time as GM, especially early on.

Appears you don't like way the NFL playoffs are structured.  Weak or not, the team with the best record always wins their division.  DG was the GM.  Sorry if that conflicts with your personal views.

2/3rds of the players on the Panthers Super Bowl team were Gettleman's guys, not Hurneys.

Hurney was fired because he couldn't win with his own guys after ten years on the job.

Gettleman took Hurney's guys, added his own and succeeded in fielding three division championship teams while having one hand tied behind his back due to Hurney's financial mismanagement.

How many good seasons did we have after 2005?

Just one.

But, keep in mind, three trips to the playoffs, two title game appearances, one Super Bowl appearance... how many teams still don’t have that from the time we entered the league until now?

Its a tough league to have continued success. Hurney may not be close to the best GM in the league, but he’s not as bad as many people make him out to be.

We won't know the ultimate answer to this question for about a decade.

It depends, I would say it will be answered by who wins a Super Bowl first. If we don’t win this year and they win in the next 5. The discussion is over. If we win this year, I am giving credit to GMan. If we win next year or the following 4 years, Hurney gets the credit.

You might want to research George Seifert's last draft in 2001.

This is the thing that always gets me.  I always hear the argument that DG cannot get the credit for his run because it would not have happened w/o Cam and Luke.  Yet these same people never mention that Hurley does not have the success he did without Smitty, Morgan, Rucker, and Jenkins

True.   But it is worth noting that Cam and Luke are more dominant and dependent cores for our success.  There isn’t a comparable duo.

Also, Hurney’s 03 free agents were YUGE

I'll give credit where due.  Hurney was close to a sure thing in the first round of the draft (the easiest round to find a productive draft pick) when he wasn't attempting to trade the pick away .

Thank goodness no one was willing to take Hurney up on his offer to trade our future first round pick for Pickle the year prior to Cam entering the draft.

Carolina having the first pick to select Cam that next year meant only one thing... Hurney had fielded the worst team in the league the previous season.

There's a ton of variables on the 2-14 season, John Fox as a lame duck coach, the start of cap issues because of the lockout season and JR forcing Hurney to lock up the team's core to save face. A ton of talent from the 2009 team either retired or left the team in FA.

TD on Pup and IR, Williams on IR for like half the season. Starting QB on IR for half the year..yada, yada.

Just the being stuck with Fox who didn't get along with JR and didn't want to be here anymore is enough to kill a season with a talented team. Add in the injuries and you get a recipe for disaster.

I am sorry, I still do not buy it.  By just removing Smitty from the franchise there is a good chance Hurney never makes a CCG, let alone a SB (the ‘05 team definitely does not).  That does not mention the three defensive players.

Yes, Hurney made important additions, so did Gettleman.  Giving Hurney credit for his success and for Gettleman’s as well is akin to Bucs fans back in the day with their stupid “Gruden took two teams to the SB” argument.

I'll just put this here.

virtually all of the planning and execution for the 2001 draft was done by director of football operations Marty Hurney and director of player personnel Jack Bushofsky
