Roughly 24 mill in cap space, who stays..who goes

I'm still floored everyone thinks we need a RB...we have CAP who is more then capable to be a solid running back if they give him the damn reps.  Every time he gets rolling, they shut him down.  Save that draft pick for a bigger area of need.

CAP mixes reasonably good runs with WTF moments in near-equal proportions. He hasn't shown he can be anything in this league. You have to be able to pass protect, catch checkdowns, and not fumble simple pitches to play RB in the NFL.

As for RB, I almost want to say just use CMC and Samuel at the RB spot and mix up the play calls a bit. If you lock down the interior OL we currently have, then the personnel for a strong interior run game just doesn't exist. So therefore, adjust the game plan offensively and use your new weapons as intended with a different type of offense to move the chains. CMC and Samuel can both be used better and this offense would be quite explosive. Short yardage plays that pick up first downs and could also be much more with guys who have burner speed and ability to make defenders miss.

Couple that with lining either of them up at WR at times, along with Funchess, Olsen, Byrd....I mean you really just need 1 more guy at WR who can be that solid #1 option. Funchess is a 2, and we know that now. Byrd is a speedster/playmaker but more like a #3. Samuel could be a #2 but if he's 4th on the WR depth chart and 2nd on the RB depth chart, he has great value. Draft or sign the #1 you need, and then you have 6 solid weapons for Cam, and a guy like Fozzy off the bench. If you really want a ground and pound RB there are plenty available late in the draft who can take a handoff and run straight up the middle for 3-4 yards at a time. Let CMC and Samuel handle the rest of the work out of the backfield. Both can run routes, catch the ball, make plays, use their speed, etc. And both can take a handoff or read option and hit a hole fast. As long as there is a hole to be hit.

Matt and TD if Olsen’s foot becomes a problem. He might have to go as well.  Funchess is soft he proved that yesterday was to busy thinking about the flag instead of fighting back inside to catch the game winning TD that landed at his feet!!!

Actually, your info is false. How can you say with the personnel we have doesn't exist for us to have a strong run game? According to PFF, Turner was the 19th ranked guard playing 13 games, and having to leave multiple of them. Norwell was the 3rd ranked guard, and Kalil was 31st ranked C playing 6 games, but we all know he's better than that. So, our interior line isn't the issue lol. You have to watch McCaffrey and realize he's not going to be an inside the guard or tackles runner because his explosiveness in that area isn't as quick as it was in college because he's playing ends and linebackers as fast as him or faster. Stewart is sluggish is about finished. You need a new RB to carry the load on 1st and 2nd down if needed, while also being able to get short yardage. We have our for sure 3rd down back. A new RB needs to happen that can handle that load and take some off of Cam.

some good powerbacks in the middle of this draft.  Chubb,  Guice, Freeman, Scarborough, all excellent. And Josh Adams , Rashaad Penny arent nessarily power backs but they have plenty of size and get run through bad tackling and use their weight to go forward in short yardage. Then you have solid all around backs like Damien Harris, Ronald Jones

The CJ move is a no brainer. The others could be negotiated.

Team certainly doesn't need an overhaul.

Need to retain Norwell. Keeping Star would be nice.

Other needs can be met via draft or reasonable free agents.

Getting Samuel and Byrd back.

Hall and Elder were basically red shirted.

Team definitely has needs, but not this black hole.

Offensive line will be solid outside of Matt Kalil if we keep Norwell.

Agree with most of this. Norwell is going to get Kevin Zeitler money, he's all but gone. We plug in Taylor Moton at G next year.

I think Star is a must re-sign because we don't have a replacement for him on the roster.

Players I would cut:

JStew- too much money and looks worn down. Some of you want him for his veteran presence. You really want to pay that much money for “veteran presence”? Cut bait and go with a younger, cheaper alternative. Can’t be any worse than it was this year.

CJ- no explanation needed

Russell Shepard- See above

Ed Dickson- tired of seeing him drop passes when the opportunity presents itself. Either find a TE #2 or a legitimate blocking TE.

Kurt Coleman- he was dreadful this year. Constantly out of position and can’t tackle. He fed off Norman and our DL. Worthless without either.

Safe for now:

Ryan Kalil- has become injury prone and is expensive. But he does lift our OL play. Might as well keep him for one more year and then let him go along with his brother.

Mike Adams- he played decent and is cheap. He’s a solid vet to have in the secondary and only has 1 year left on his deal.

Matt Kalil- the dead cap he would create wouldn’t be worth it. Ride it out for one more year and then release him post June 1st.

Captain Munnerlyn- see above. I believe Corn Elder is the future.

Cutting Johnson (3.1 M), Stewart (3.7 M), Shepard (2.1 M) and Davis (5.7 M) frees up almost 15 million.

Restructuring Turner and Addison to years 2022 and 2020 could free up another 2.9 M and 2.3 M, respectively.

This would give us almost 38 million to sign rookie class and free agents for 2018.

Cutting Munnerlyn would put a sizable dent in our cap space.  Coleman could free up 2.75 M, but I don't know how we'd replace him with a better FS for the price.  Unless something becomes too good to pass up, I think we're stuck with him too.

I get that a lot of people would lose their collective minds over cutting ties with Davis, but the time to do that is now.  He's 34 years old, and we have Mayo and Thompson in the wings for the transition.  Cutting him saves us substantially while sending him off with a nice 4.25 M thank you for his amazing service.

Priority signings would be Norwell and Star.  No questions, just make it happen.  If we have enough for a 1 year deal for Peppers, do it to help usher in the redshirts as earlier posters mentioned.

Lastly, sign Silotolu for a dollar and promptly trade him for a ham-on-rye, direct from the dumpster.  Douse it in kerosene and set it ablaze on I-77 Southbound during rush hour.

    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
