Wilks to the Giants may be back in play

Worth noting: #Steelers coach Mike Tomlin took time away from preparing for the #Jaguars this week to call the #Giaints and make a case for #Panthers DC Steve Wilks. Would be the first minority coach in franchise history.

As #Vikings OC Pat Shurmur's team takes the field today, he remains a strong candidate for the #Giants job. If his team loses, NYG could move quickly. His staff is ready. #Panthers DC Steve Wilks remains a strong candidate, as well.

#Patriots DC Matt Patricia has long been the favorite for the #Lions, despite overtures from the #Giants. @AdamSchefter reported he's likely their coach, and that has been my understanding all along, as well. Patriots likely lose Patricia and McDaniels.

#Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has indicated to potential assistants to wait for him. The belief is he takes the #Colts job, as he's the clear favorite, sources say. Indy's other finalist is Mike Vrabel.

The Giants current finalists are Patricia (who's expected to join the Lions) McDaniels (who likely ends up with the Colts) and Shurmur (who's also in play for the Cardinals).  It has been mentioned that the Giants may also be interested in Jim Schwartz, but nothing's been said for certain other than that there's a "dark horse" fourth candidate who could be Schwartz, but could also be Wilks.

There's also this from Voth (replying to Ben Volin)

Romo says he expects both Patriots coordinators to be gone after this playoff run. My crystal ball says McDaniels to Indy, Patricia to the Giants

Or McDaniels is still gonna hold out for a “perfect” roster and Mara/Gettleman aren’t hiring a guy like Patricia.

Person weighs in on this too.

Complicated, I know...

The most interesting part to me though is Tomlin weighing in.  I'll be interested to see if that has an effect.

Of course, even if Wilks misses out on the Giants, there's still the Cardinals and potentially the Titans if they dump Mularkey after the egg he laid last night (he was already on thin ice anyway).

Sadly Wilks is just the Rooney candidate of the year. I’d expect multiple seasons of him getting the run around before he’s hired.

Maybe for some teams, but reports were that Gettleman was pushing for him with the Giants.  And for the record, the Giants also interviewed another minority candidate (Eric Studesville).

The Cardinals were said to have real interest too.

Are you saying Wilks is clearly a better HC candidate than Patricia or McDaniels

Well we’ve seen McDaniels hang his job on The Golden Calf of Bristol. We’ve also have seen what happens to Patriot coordinators when they leave Bill.

Scot do you have any sources actually linking DG to Wilks, and not Giants ownership? It's a logical connecting of the dots on the surface but I don't really think it's like you think it is where Wilks is DG's preferred candidate.

Yep. For as great a coach as Belichick may be, his coaching tree is worse than Charlie Brown's Christmas sapling.

What does Tomlin have to do with Wilks on the professional level ?

They're both minorities? That's the closest connection I see between the two... Their teams may have played each other a few times but doubt they had much interaction as HC vs. lower level assistant coach.

Giants beat writer Gary Myers was the one reporting that Gettleman lobbied for Wilks while Mara and Tisch wanted one of the Patriot guys.

FWIW, Wilks is one of those weird cases where he’d be incredible as a head coach but bad as a defensive coordinator.

He has the leadership, respect, and mindset you want in a HC, but lacks the talent to effectively manage playcalling and scheming as a coordinator.

Well Belicheck disciples don’t have a good track record when they leave.

Sometimes it’s hard to know just how much better a patriarch makes the underlings look or vice versus.

wilks defense I thought looked good for the garbage secondary he had to work with and an offense that put them in bad field position a lot.

i think Gettlemen is waiting for Patricia, but don’t be surprised if it’s Wilks

    • This might be a good time for a Jerry Richardson reference.   ...   Actually, no it wouldn't 😕
    • Nicolas Cage is certainly fun to watch in "Nicolas Cage" roles (Face Off, The Rock, 8MM). Parts generally need to suit his particular persona or things can wind up looking kind of silly ('Not the bees! NOT THE BEEEES!!!") Having him play an actual historical figure... eeehhh, just seems like a bad idea, similar to having Dwayne Johnson star in a biopic about Martin Luther King 😕
    • Dude, I’m sorry but I don’t get your worries about this magical culture and fan involvement. We’ve sucked balls since 2018 because we actually did what you want to do. Limp along and try to win as many games as possible without actually being good. All that does is cause the same problems you didn’t want to gamble on happening. Well, they did what you wanted and what did we get for it? 7 drafts and Young, Horn and Brown, not exactly a SB winning core. We haven’t won more than 7 games since 2017 and you are worried about risking our culture, etc.? That’s silly. Cam and Luke have been gone for 5+ years now. We finally had a draft in 2025 where we actually had our full allotment of picks. We absolutely screwed up by not going full rebuild. Texans did in the same window and they’ve been to the playoffs multiple times and have a much better team. Any fan issues now in Houston even with the Watson massage debacle? I will separate this statement because I get annoyed at back seat driving type comments. Many of us like minded draft followers and GM and wannabes said that we should have tanked in 2022 and traded every guy where teams offered quality picks. You might not like it, but we were 100% correct. Sure, Fitterer might have pissed them away but the Rams 2024/2025 1sts would have been Morgan’s picks. You also have to rebuild through the draft, period, which is why bad teams try build up picks, not trade them all away or don’t take hauls when available. There’s not one team that rebuilt through FA and was successful. It doesn’t exist because the key guys (Eagles OL/DL, Hurts, Mahomes, Kelce, Chris Jones) on Super Bowl teams (Kuechly, TD, Cam) are drafted. I grew up in CT and I went to Pats games when people handed you stacks of free tickets in the parking lot because no one wanted to go to their games. One QB and a bunch of solid OL/D picks and they were a different franchise. We can only hope that Canales is the right coach and that 2025 is the start of drafting well. If I’m being objective, we’ve still got a ways to go.
