I actually do remember Gale Gilbert. He was a decent backup.

But Carolina could be interested if the Bills end up cutting Taylor, whose skill set would make him a mini-me version of Newton. But Taylor wants to be a starter, so this seems like a longshot.

▪  Teddy Bridgewater: Turner was in Minnesota and worked Taylor out before the Vikings drafted him in the first round in 2014. It remains to be seen whether Bridgewater will be a free agent (there’s discrepancy over whether the final year of his contract, when he was on the physically unable to perform list for the first six games, will count). And even if he hits the market, Bridgewater – like Taylor – won’t be looking for a place where he sits the bench.

▪  Josh McCown: McCown, who turns 39 in July, was popular in the locker room and front office during his two-year stint in Carolina in 2008-09, which coincided with Hurney’s first stint as GM. McCown had the best stastical season of his 15-year career in 2017 with the Jets. McCown could draw interest from a QB-needy team like Arizona.

McCown is a solid backup (Smith liked him). I'd love to have him back.

White, the Western Kentucky QB who had a good showing at the Senior Bowl, fits the bill. ▪  Riley Ferguson: The former Butler High standout, who started his career at Tennessee, threw 36 TDs, with only nine INTs, during his final season at Memphis. ▪  J.T. Barrett: The winningest quarterback in Ohio State history has game-changing running skills. But scouts aren’t convinced Barrett’s arm will hold up in the NFL. It might be worth taking a chance on Barrett to see if he can play receiver, something Hurney infamously did previously.

Sounds like J T Barrett would basically be Joe Webb.  Really liked what I saw of Mike White in the Senior Bowl, and arm strength is a heavily overrated measurement.

Having a developmental guy as your backup isn't unusual.

That said, I feel a lot better about that option now that Norv and Scott Turner are here rather than Ken Dorsey.

He's not under contract.

And a few years ago I could have agreed with that.  His last few performances were absolute garbage.

Neither are the other free agent options.  Plus all three are probably jostling for a starting opportunity.  Bridgewater would be interesting if we were willing to have a QB competition, but that isn't going to happen.

Go ahead and get into a bidding war for backup quarterbacks.  

Guys like Josh McCown and Matt Moore (also a free agent) don't generate "bidding wars".

      I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.

      At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.

      Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
