And hey, if you really wanna get your tinfoil hat out, check this tweet from Voth.

Wouldn't shock me (nor necessarily bother me) if we took a QB in the 5th round or later. I'm not on board with taking one earlier than that though. IMO, JT Barrett is a name to watch for us in the later rounds.

Sounds like we plan on making a legitimate attempt to keep Star. We're probably hoping that his particular skill set isn't going to command big money on the open market. We may be right, but I think a 3-4 team in particular will value him more than we will. I'm not even sure we're even going to bother negotiating with Norwell. Maybe tell him and Rosenhaus to bring us their best offer once free agency starts and see if we can match it, but I think we've simply accepted that given the weak OG FA class, he's gonna be gone and he's likely going to be the highest paid OG in the NFL. Good for him.

It's my understanding that Butler does not play the NT like Star but is much better suited for the UT, which is where KK plays. They can both play on obvious passing downs but I don't think Butler will be able to fill Star's job on running downs.

The good news is hopefully we can find a good stop gap at NT for this year and have a rotation of guys.

I like Mike White.  The Richmond guy whose name escapes me was good too but I don't know where he's projected to go.

Just take the comp picks and the financial flexibility afforded by not signing these two, as great as they may be. I think we are capable roster-wise of picking up the slack. Maybe a drop-off, but what is the cost of squeezing up too close to the cap ceiling. That lack of flexibility can hamstring you sometimes.

You can't pay everyone top dollar.

White has a big arm and a prototypical NFL QB build big arms and prototypical builds almost always get over-drafted. I think he'll be gone before we're willing to consider a QB.

Comp picks aren't guaranteed, though as I understand the formula it sounds quite possible.

It would mean us being fairly inactive in the free agent market.

He doesn't play NT because it would be a waste of his talent. There is a reason the more talented DT's play UT. By alignment, it puts them in a more favorable situation.

Nose tackles are easily replaceable, which is why they command little on the open market. I wouldn't worry too much about Star. There is a reason that Short has already been paid and Star is likely on his way out.

Rivera sounds like he wants Butler to play Star's spot.

Washington sounds like he doesn't.

I imagine they'll have to hash that out between them.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
