It's that time of the year for me.

Been talking to my friend (a nfl scout) about some of the prospects in the draft, and as I do every year, I will drop the things that I am hearing from him here that maybe isn't being heard elsewhere.

Mike Hughes is the best CB in the draft and is a top 15 pick (off field character concerns may push Ward ahead in draft order)
Calvin Ridley is a blue chip wide receiver prospect and is far ahead of what Corey Davis was coming out
The top two quarterbacks in this class are better than any qb coming out in five years besides Carson Wentz
Connor Williams is the best tackle prospect in this draft as opposed to Mike McGlinchey
People are sleeping on Stanford defensive tackle Harrison Philips, UTEP guard Will Hernandez, Georgia running back Nick Chubb, Iwoa center James Daniels, and Louisville corner Jaire Alexander, all of which he expects to go within the top 40.

I'll drop whatever else I hear from him here.

Which 2 are considered as the top 2 qbs? Allen and Darnold?

Darnold and Allen. All three at the top are elite and better than anyone else coming out for a while, minus Carson Wentz.

@Verge what is your guy hearing about the St Brown WR from Notre Dame?

Ive seen a bigger gap in where he can go than any prospect in awhile.

Ive seen some scouts say he is a lock 2nd-early 3rd post combine.  He had a Huge combine and measurables looked real damn good yet his name has stayed quiet.  Meanwhile Sutton has looked much less impressive and some scouts have shot him past Ridley

But still a lot of scouts say is a 5th round guy

He is pretty overblown. He really struggles to get off the line  when jammed, doesn't use his arms to extend, somehow lacks separation despite his speed, seems to have an on/off switch, doesn't adjust well, and he drops easy balls a lot. I would be kind of surprised if he goes before the 4th round. Someone will take him because he is 6'5 and runs a 4.48.

Thats why im kind of confused about it as well.

Sutton struggles more than any of the top 10 or so WRs to create seperation.  And showed at the combine that the people saying he was the next Julio were wrong, running a slower 40.  But his stock shot above Ridley.

Sutton does struggle with separation, but he is more physical, runs better routes, very willing to catch over the middle, lots of production with limited qb play, super productive on slants/crossing routes, and is a very good at contested balls.

I still dont get the DE in the 1st love based on how our DL is more set this year than anything else. If we do we are passing up a much better player at a bigger need position. I get that Peppers is done after this year but Hall and Cox will have another year of experience and we can go DE nuts next year when the class looks better. We have the same need at C with Kalil and S with Adams and TE with Olsen and still have a current FS and LG hole.

We are in a rare position where Pep afford us the opportunity to have patience with a DE prospect this year. He can join the rotation year 1 and contribute that way without insane expectations or responsibilities being placed on him. DE is arguably a top 2-3 need after this season if Pep retires like is expected. If we draft a guy in the first this year and develop him for a year we'll be more or less set at the position for the 4 years after that. If DE is BPA which is very possible then we gotta go with it. I'd love like hell to get Ridley for immediate contribution or if a safety or corner is BPA then great and he'll contribute more this year, but DE is and should be a real consideration. My preference is by far Rasheem Green and I hope he can be had in the 2nd. I'd be fine with him in the 1st even but I think he may last to our 2nd and it'd be a perfect pick there.

    • I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.
    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
