First round "light" on top picks?

Here's a nice list of guys we've met so far. It's almost always the case that guys we meet are the ones we pick.

https://panthergf.wordpress.com/2018/01/18/2018-draft-prospect-visit-workout-meeting-list/

Out of those my favorites for our first pick that could realistically be there are

1) Josh Jackson (CB) - His knock will be that he played mostly zone and he didn't have the greatest of combines in drills. But he's perfect for our zone heavy system. We need a guy like Josh Jackson who was one of the best ball hawks in 2017.

2) Will Hernandez (G) - A monster of a guard. Played in a small school but played well against big competition. Was one of the best linemen in the Senior Bowl and showed up in the combine as well. Still a bit raw in technique but he has the potential to be an all-pro guard like our soon to be departing Norwell.

3) Isaiah Wynn - G/T - His measurables say he's a guard. He was probably the next best lineman to Hernandez in the Senior Bowl by switching to guard. Panthers have always loved versatile lineman. If we pick him, we could test him out at Tackle. If he can't cut it, put him in Guard.

4) DJ Moore (WR) - Everyone in the Huddle is falling for the measurable of DJ Chark and giving excuses for not having a QB, DJ Moore didn't have one either. In fact, he had as many as 8 different QBs passing to him during his 3-year career. Despite that, in 2017 he became the focal point of Maryland's offense and performed just as well as DJ Chark in the combine.

5) Dallas Goedert - Wish we could have seen him perform in the combine. Great TE from a small school. Potential Olsen successor with his contract looming?

I like Derwin James, but I feel he won't be there unless 5-6 QBs get taken before we pick.

That list is a good example of tiers, I could see some teams having that group of players all ranked rather close.

At that point it might be a good idea to trade down.

We are in no mans land at the moment.

I mentioned somewhere here that I hope Cleveland takes Barkley and Minkah or Chubb then trades back into the bottom of the 1st to get their QB

Someone mentioned that trading our first and second to Cleveland for the 33 and 35 would be about right on the trade value chart and I loved the idea

There will be fantastic value at the top of the second round

This also comes up every year (and perhaps this should be the year to do it): Should we look to trade back and acquire more picks?

opposite. if the draft is front loaded then you go get the good players at the top. acquiring more picks to get a bunch of JAGs later doesn't improve the team.

Cleveland, who picks top 5 every year says, "Yeah, picking high always works for us"

do they trade up?

No need to, they suck every year even though they always pick top 5.

NE, who is in the Super Bowl almost every year, constantly picks at the bottom of the round and often trades out altogether

Just saying that they are no perfect methods as you posted above.  Panthers need help at about 10 positions and trading picks to get one guy is dumb, especially when we don't have the cash to pick up a lot of FA guys

ah ok so they are a shitty team who picks high, they're not a good team trading high to fill a few holes with good players. so basically what you replied to me with is drivel and we'd be better off if you didn't waste everybody's time.

and NE are garbage drafters. they trade down every year, draft JAGs, cut them, and fill their holes with free agents.

Seeing that we need help and backups at

QB

RB

TE

WR

G

C

DE

ILB

OLB

S

And knowing that we don't have much to spend in FA, how many draft picks will you give up to get into the top 12?

If the draft is deep at positions of need,  no way it makes sense to trade up.  Plenty of hits come out of the late first and second round in general.

Yup.  I see us trading up for a DE, S, or OL.  About it.

    • That depends on where he's at because if you look at his first 3 seasons before he got sick he had 49 rec as a rookie followed by 56 and then his pro bowl season he had 103 rec. If he's somewhere between seasons 2 and 3 then that wouldn't be bad at all. We'll have to wait and see but from the few clips I've seen and the comments I've heard and read I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case. Personally, I'm really pulling for him and I think he's going to be the comeback player of the year.
    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
