Giants control the draft?

Recommended Posts

I found this on CBS Sports.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/why-giants-and-dave-gettleman-control-how-the-first-round-of-the-2018-nfl-draft-unfolds/

I am more inclined to believe the Browns still control the draft.  They have 2 of the 1st for pick.  What they do will dictate what the Giants will do.

If they Take Chubbs or Barkley with the first pick.  This leaves Barkley open for NYG.

Barkley has to be the first pick.  He just has to be.  I know it's  the Browns,  but even they can't find a way not to take Barkley.  This is a KISS moment if I've ever seen one.

I also expect them to make a run at AJ McCarron.

I think if you looked back to prior years, you'd find an article explaining how the team with the #2 pick actually controls the draft on almost an annual basis.

The theory generally goes that once the team at #1 has a consensus pick or narrows its focus or indicates they won't trade down or blah blah whatever, the #2 team is sitting in the driver's seat. I didn't read the above article, but it won't surprise me if it's based on some variation of that theme.

I guess every year or so this notion hits some analyst like a revelation and they believe they have a new idea, so then off we go again.

Heck, I think one that's those articles might even have been written about us the year we had that pick.

If the Browns get a FA QB, then Barkley is the shoe-in. However, the two options that they've fuged up on with Alex Smith and Captain Kirk really rule out that happening. I just don't think anyone wants to play up there and they may not have a choice but to draft a QB. They should be breaking the bank for Kirk. Or just sign Kaperneck and get it over with.

Scenarios based on the Browns doing the right thing or the smart thing rarely pan out.

You're pretty spot on about how the article reads.

In most years but because they have #4 I think they have more power on the way the draft will go.  Most mocks have them taking Darnold.  However, if they take Barkley that shakes up the top 5 all together.  Plus at number 4 they still will get a "Predicted" Franchise QB.

Is this a giants forum? Gettleman has too many fanboys for doing nothing special

Read the article.  It isn't about Gettleman it is about how the draft might fallout based on the Giants move.  This is the offseason and though it won't affect us to much it is a conversation about the draft.

IF you don't like the thread.  DON'T COMMENT...  It is pretty simple.

Long time Brown's reporter Tony Grossi has been arguing vehemently against them taking Barkley. He believes the Browns absolutely must get the right quarterback first because they've screwed it up far too many years in a row..

He may have a point.

Draft Barkley, trade back in the first, get a tackle and a guard. Throw everything at Cousins. If that doesn't work get Keenum (or bradford and start praying for health).

Defense gets Peppers back and year 2 and 3 for Garret, Nassib, Ogbah.

This team is seriously that close to playoffs if they get their head out of their ass.

    • They won my vote of confidence for this year
    • I really like the way this team is trending. Morgan and Canales rookie campaign saw them do some questionable picks but, they also did some really good things. Especially addressing the offensive line.  Young had such a disastrous rookie season where his confidence was nowhere to be seen.  You can attribute part of this to a terrible offensive line.  So, we focused on the O-line.   We then brought in several defensive free agents that were supposed to compliment Brown.  Once Brown went down those players could not hold the line.  2025 we focused on defense in Free Agency and brought in several good players.  We then added more talent in the draft.  I think we have competition in several areas where Vets are not guaranteed to be starters.  Our offensive line is pretty set with some good backups.  Our defensive line is going to be a war for who comes out to be the starters.  All in All, we are leaps and bounds much better than 2023 roster.  Canales made some rookie head coach mistakes but grew as the season progressed.  He got our QB, who was starting to look like a huge bust, playing with confidence and poise.  Now it appears Young is moving upwards.  Maybe he is a QB whisperer.  After Young started to play better our offense was fun to watch.  Morgan knows football and knows what he wants in his players.  It appears to me that not only are these players he's drafted really good and got great value for them, but they are also high motor, intense players. Our defense, in the past, was always the key to our success.  I think Morgan is building a great defense. I know it is too soon to tell but I believe we may have a tandem that will be around a long time.  It would be nice to see Morgan/Canales be in the same class as Lynch/Shanahan and Beane/McDermott.   I know many Huddlers will overreact, but I truly believe we have a tandem that will be around a long time. TIME WILL TELL. Go Panthers
