How Sgt. Peppers might save Private Ryan

Everyone is wanting MH to make moves, but he really cannot until he signs Peppers on the cheap.  Getting a DE in free agency/trade would then become a priority and could exhaust most of the cap room.  Drafting a DE is not a realistic solution.

Thinking about the season with Addison, Horton, Hall, and Cox Jr. is scary.

Cutting other players to determine cap room is not recommended until we know about Pep.  For example,  If Peppers does not sign, it simply adds a need and takes cap room away to fix  the problem. Could signing a free agent DE necessitate more than cutting Sheperd-? There is not a lot of meat on the bone of this roster to create $10m for a DE.  Could it mean that we cannot afford the oft-injured "Private Ryan" (Kalil) if we have to create some bucks for a legit free agent?

Marty has to address DE as a priority if Peppers does not return. Doing so could cause him to reconsider contracts.  There is no way Kalil's huge deal (considering his neck situation) would not leap off the ledger sheet.  We will then see if MH is over his emotional crisis if that occurs.  It could be that the right thing to do would be to cut Kalil, play Larsen, and sign a veteran LG and a veteran DE.  Will Marty betray his buddy and rob him of his swan song?  Stay tuned...

So there is no sense getting salty about the lack of movement until we know about Peppers.  (Yes, That pun just happened).

We really need to give some attention to the DE position. Under Gettleman the results were either somewhat adequate or just outright ugly.

13 million to Greg Hardy for one game. Signed aging veterans like Jared Allen and Julius Peppers for one year. Extended aging veterans like Charles Johnson until we finally had to ask him to leave. Oh, and who can forget second round pick Kony Ealy that Gettleman supposedly mulled trading up for.

Meanwhile we threw first rounders at DT's who just rot on the bench.

But muh hog mollies.

So would you sacrifice Ryan K. for a veteran DE if it comes down to it, or do you keep Ryan K for a year and go low-budget DE and hope Horton, Hall, etc step up?

Interesting thought.  He is a Marty boy,  but no way.

If he could just not be a moron and do and say the right things publicly (take responsibility, admit it even he thinks he didn't do anything wrong, apologize to her and the team and league, go to rehab, etc. and put his head down not doing rap videos, MMA fights, etc.) he's good enough to still be in the league and I don't think it's THAT far fetched that we'd give him a shot with a new owner. Rivera liked him and reportedly went to bat for him, as did several players. It's not happening but if he could just do the small little bit that he should he could get back in the league.

Do we still have Larsen? My gut says losing Ryan Kalil is definitely an option, but I think discussing his absence in March and watching his absence and the possible ramifications unfold before our eyes in September are two very different things.

At this point we basically have to fill the void at DE with veterans because drafting a stud who will step up immediately is about like hitting the lotto.

You get the feeling that there is some collusion in the NFL ownership ranks--Kaepernick, Ray Rice, Hardy---there is more to this (in my opinion) than one owner's decision.  Remember back in the pre-Goodell days when the Raiders would have signed all 3 of the players above...

According to Sportrac: Tyler Larsen signed a 1 year, $630,000 contract with the Carolina Panthers, including an average annual salary of $630,000. In 2018, Larsen will earn a base salary of $630,000, while carrying a cap hit of $630,000.

Not sure when this happened

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
