I personally agree. Great players do not get a statue. Great LEADERS do. For all the 89 was, a leader he was not in terms of TEAM play! Let him get into the HoF. That's enough for him. Statue at OUR stadium after he retired from another team? No way man.

Some of you ride 89 way too hard, and speak to how mediocre we have been over this years to add that fool a statue.

100% agreed.

Moral character missing...fine. No one is perfect.

Great player? ...that’s a lot of statues.

A true leader and a legendary player, very few of those, and is the reason for a statue ie Mills statue.

Smitty was a great player but was a cancer. And not even close to a leader. Snotty wouldn’t ever lead a team or players to anything. There are plenty of examples like him...so no need for a statue. Which is fine no biggie, he was a beast and was fun to watch.

Here in Carolina I think we’ve been so deprived of stars that the ones we have had fans think they need a statue. Look around the NFL, there are great players everywhere teams just don’t give them statues.

Lewis and Manning were leaders. Their teams not only won Super Bowls but they were almost solely the reasons they did (Manning’s first one). They single handedly changed their franchises and defined them for a decade. One player on a team of 53.

Ray Lewis killed someone and Peyton Manning went around forcibly rubbing his genitals on women.

If you're arguing whether either are somehow better than Steve Smith, you are either verrrry confused, or just plain not right in the head.

There is no way possible way we could as a organization give this dude a statue.  I really dont think he needs to be added in the ring of honor.  Smitty is out spoken and has a huge attitude, he is the definition of small man syndrome.

So the Pro Football Hall of Fame is gonna give him a bust, but the Panthers will be too good to honor him in any way? Nah, dude. Nah.

Smitty is Panthers AND WR GOAT.

Rice and all those others before and since will never have an ounce of the passion that Smitty had. IDGAF

Dude deserves partial ownership of the team, a spot on the board, or whatever else we can get him, even if it is only a statue. First ballot HOF and you got haters in here. If you hate Smitty, you aren’t a Panthers fan. Period.

I think it is funny that people are in here holding Pep’s jock but when he left the lynch mob was out for him too.

All this vitriol for former and even current players says more about you than them.

I’d say probably the only two former Panthers that deserve the hate they get are Rae Carruth and MeAngelo. It isn’t a fair comparison between the two, obviously, but those are the only two I can think of that I legitimately don’t care for at all now.

Heck, I don’t think MeAngelo is too far gone, even. I could see a redemption arc down the road, but probably not any time soon.

Smitty WAS the Panthers for a decade. He MADE Jake Delhomme look like a legit franchise QB. He’s GOAT WR. Put him in Marvin Harrison’s shoes in the same time frame and he’s #1 in every stat category.

Love it, Smitty was ferocious on Sunday. Glad he was on our side.

loved me some Smitty attitude every Sunday...didn't he retire a raven, tho. hard to get onboard with putting a statue of someone who did not retire as a PANTHER in a Panthers stadium...no matter how good they were or how much I like them.

on the field attitude is one thing...punching and breaking jaws are another

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
