Quite a few in 2010 actually. People around here were ready to run him out of town during that time. Steve didn't want to be here and it showed.

Would you want to play if Pickles was your QB?

Look Smitty was a great talent...but can we name 1 player he took under his wing and tried to make better?  It seemed all he wanted was to get his numbers and then win as long as his numbers were good.  Jake was scared of him so all he did was throw the ball to smitty.

When Cam got here, Cam looked straight down on this little guy yelling at him and didnt just throw the ball to smitty bc his that was what he wanted.  For these reasons he shouldnt have his jersey retired or a statue....hell i wouldnt let him retire a panther even if he wanted too.

I have to give praise to Gettleman...looking back that was the best move he made was when he let smitty go

Sure - because that would mean I was a highly compensated NFL player.

You asked a question. I chimed in. Didn't realize there were stipulations with the question being asked. I just remembered how many people were fed up with Steve (and the team itself) at that time.

Wow this thread went to poo fast. To be fair this is a pretty purposeless topic. How the fug did this even come up?

Only sentiment I have: i wonder how many of those bashing Steve Smith for his character gets pissed off when we don’t sign, trade or draft players with character concens........

There is no way possible way we could as a organization give this dude a statue.  I really dont think he needs to be added in the ring of honor.  Smitty is out spoken and has a huge attitude, he is the definition of small man syndrome.

Smith needs to be recognized. He has been a great asset to this team when we had him attitude or not and he deserves to be in Ring of Honor and whatever else he deserves but he doesn't need lame comments like the ones you made here. He made his presence known and doesn't back down to anyone which made him who he was so give the man his due and stop commenting with nonsense.

sorry that solid evidence shows smitty as good as he was....was not all that and was a worse person

Your evidence is not particularly compelling. Most people would agree that Smith had his character flaws but using that reasoning to trash him just makes it seem like you have a personal ax to grind rather than even attempting to make a coherent argument as to why he should be excluded from any franchise accolades. Perhaps that is your personal criteria for what constitutes merit as a Panther but you have to admit that it clearly does not align with the majority of the fans and likely not with the franchise itself.

why??  Because he demanded the ball while he was here...got pissed when he didnt get the ball?  He prolly should have put better numbers than he has

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
