Panthers make personnel changes

The Carolina Panthers announced multiple changes to the club’s coaching, scouting and football operations staffs Tuesday.

 

Richard Rodgers will serve as the secondary coach and Jeff Imamura will serve as assistant secondary/cornerbacks coach. In addition, the Panthers hired Vincent Rivera as defensive quality control coach.

 

Mark Carrier, who has served as the team’s director of player engagement since 2011, has been named senior advisor to the general manager. Carrier played 12 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver, spending the final four seasons (1995-98) of his career with the Panthers. Carrier notched a 1,000-yard receiving season in Carolina’s inaugural season in 1995 and still ranks fifth in team history in career receiving yards with 2,547.

 

Jeff Morrow has been named senior director of college scouting following one season as the team’s director of college scouting. Morrow has 23 years of NFL experience, including 20 with the Panthers.

 

Eric Stokes and Mike Szabo have been named regional directors of college scouting. Stokes has 20 years of playing and scouting experience in the NFL. He joined the Panthers in 2016 as southwest area scout. Prior to joining Carolina, Stokes was the assistant general manager of the Miami Dolphins from 2014-15. Szabo most recently served as Carolina’s national scout and has 18 years of NFL experience, including 16 with the Panthers.

 

The Panthers have hired Mike Martin, who most recently served as the Houston Texans assistant director of college scouting, as southwest area scout. Martin brings 17 years of NFL personnel experience, including 14 years as a scout, to Carolina. He spent the previous 11 seasons with the Texans.

 

Rob Hanrahan has been named assistant director of pro personnel. He joined the Panthers in 2017 as a pro scout after 16 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, including two seasons (2015-16) as the team’s director of pro personnel.

 

Austin Bergstrom, who previously held roles in equipment and football operations, has been named college scouting coordinator.

 

Chris Herbert, who has worked in Carolina’s video department for 18 seasons, has been named assistant video director.

Saw the Rodgers promotion coming.  Ugh! We've got lots of secondary questions already.  I'd have preferred a more seasoned choice, and Lord knows there were some available.

Vincent Rivera is Ron's nephew.  For a low level position like that, I don't have a problem with it.  Scott Turner worked his way up.

I remember Carrier as a player.  He's a good guy.  New position could just be a glorified executive assistant.  Hard to say.

I could be wrong, but that kinda sounds like one of those "we'll give you a bigger title and then give somebody else your duties" sort of things. Basically what happened with Don Gregory before he was phased out.  We'll see.

Stokes is a guy I remember making a mental note about.  He went being one step away from the top all the way down to the bottom.  I wondered if he might start to climb the ladder again given his past success.

Hanrahan is another guy who wound up taking a few steps down the ladder.  I think Beane let him go.  Might also have helped him get the job here. He'll be working under Director of Pro Personnel (and Jerry Richardson's grandson) Matt Allen.

This one I'm not sure about.  How do you go from being an equipment intern and a logistics guy to being a college scouting "coordinator", whatever that is (not the same as a director).  I'd have to know more about what his "coordinator" duties actually involve. Also, he shares a name with an airport?

Basic promotion, fairly simple.

People are probably gonna think these are related to David Tepper.  I question that.  Tepper hasn't really been around that long, and possibly not long enough to make a bunch of these decisions at one.
