  • WINNERS

- Curtis Samuel, 2 catches 65 yards, once again looking like a difference maker 

- McCaffrey/Kenjon Barner, both looked shifty and electric out there. Barner is a nice player bc he can be a receiving threat at RB and PR/KR

- Jared Norris, 5 tackles and was very active at LB and special teams. We would probably keep him over Ben Jacobs at this point

- Corn Elder, 4 tackles and an INT, looks like he can contribute as our #4 CB

- Alex Armah, outstanding tonight. Might be best FB we've had since Brad Hoover 

  • LOSERS

- Matt Kalil, we all saw it, very bad performance 

- Brendan Mahon, looked solid out there but hurt his leg and did not finish the game 

- Da'Norris Searcy, terrible head to head tackle attempt that lead to a concussion. Might have just lost his job to Gaulden 

- Taylor Heinicke, 5/9  88 yards is less than impressive. Had a clear opportunity to win backup QB job, did not take advantage

Christian McCaffery looked in midseason form flashing his speed on a 71-yard touchdown run via a well blocked power play early in the game. He showed quickness and power of his own in between the tackles on inside zone runs as well. However, Cam Newton struggled at times including throwing an interception on a coverage misread on a crossing route. To be fair he was also under pressure a bit in the pocket as Carolina’s pass-blocking struggled at times with the Miami pass-rush, including several easy wins against Matt Kalil.

Daeshon Hall had a solid game as a pass-rusher and his most important play was when he hit Fales as he threw early in the fourth quarter. That pass ended up behind the receiver and was intercepted. He also executed a textbook stunt late in the first half which ended up allowing Efe Obada to loop free, combining to force a throw away.

Corn Elder played the most snaps on the Panthers defense and was solid the entire game. His outstanding interception early in the fourth quarter was the play that really stood out even though the pass was behind the receiver, he still tipped it up with his left hand and then swatted it back to himself with his right before grabbing the interception. Elder also forced a fumble and shot into the backfield for a tackle for loss in the game.

Winners

Christian McCaffrey: The Panthers running back is already in mid-season form after he carved up the Dolphins defense for a 71-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Panthers have said this offseason that they plan to give him around 25-30 touches per game, and based on tonight that is definitely a solid strategy.

Ian Thomas: It’s hard to not be happy for this kid. He showed why he was drafted tonight on a beautiful catch and run that resulted in a 27-yard touchdown in the first half. He’s going to be something special, folks. This is just the beginning.

Curtis Samuel: Samuel had some great catches tonight and showed why he was drafted in the second round. He finally looks healthy, too—which is an added bonus.

Corn Elder: When you’re competing for a spot on the 53-man roster, you have to make plays that get you noticed. Elder did that tonight with a very nice tip drill interception. Well done, Corn. Well done.

Kenjon Barner: Barner had himself a nice game and made a case to make the 53-man roster as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart. Yes, he played late in the game against Miami’s backups, but you have to take advantage of any opportunity you can get, and he did that tonight. I’m looking forward to seeing more from him next week. He would have scored a touchdown too, but Elijah Hood had to come in and steal it from him.

Elder really flashed on screen.  He may be developing into something to keep an eye on.

      Seems to me that the Bucs have less fight in them now than they had in week 16. The real test is going to be if the Panthers can sustain focus and discipline throughout. With the Bucs being at home, maybe that gives them a little boost of confidence and energy.  Wouldn’t it be something if for ONCE the Panthers came out and dominated from the opening snap and just took this shook Bucs team to task?  If the Panthers see-saw form follows, we are in line for the W. Hard to say we have momentum but we do have a pretty clear pattern of following a loss with a win.  I’m going to say 24-16 Panthers!!

      When Parcell’s said Bryce better “walk on water”…..the implied concern wasn’t that the tiny QB could survive being hit.  It was acknowledging he would have to be extremely special to overcome the handicaps he would face at this level.  Which he isn’t and can’t.  which isn’t just being hit.  It’s being able to play in an NFL pocket and make NFL throws from it….and that ultimately is Bryce’s problem.  He doesn’t play well from a NFL pocket and can’t make all the throws as needed.  He can’t see as others can.  Which impacts the throws he does and doesn’t take.  It also impacts him bailing and killing plays and turning them into scrambles/dead plays

      9:30 kick off here in Scotland, which is better than the 01:20 early hours of Monday that I feared. Will definitely be watching, but probably wouldn't if it had been 0120 as I need to be up for work at 05:45. Falcons Saints is 6pm on the Sunday so will watch that too if it becomes relevant
