It's a staple of the zone blitz but other schemes sometimes use it too.

Are we even running a zone blitz scheme anymore? Seems like we don't really blitz much this year or I could just be use to Wilks system where we blitzed almost every down.

I wonder if we'll see more of it when TD comes back? The thing about having both LBs (we almost always run this look out of a nickel formation) right up on the LOS giving the look of a blitz is that it requires studs at LB. You gotta have a guy who can both threaten as a blitzer as well as have the ability of giving the impression that he's coming while at the same time being able to drop back into coverage if that's what the call or read determines. Not just any team can pull off this look routinely with a high level of effectiveness. Having two LBs like Luke and TD is what allowed us to give that look so often. You don't see it nearly that often from other teams around the league. They don't have Luke and TD. Right now, we don't either.

I figure we are, but I won't claim to have done a lot of schematic analysis of the defense over the last couple of weeks. Could be worth taking a look at it since we're not really doing all that well this year.

Regardless, running a Zone Blitz scheme doesn't necessarily mean you blitz all the time, especially if you run it out of a 4-3 like we do. It's still ideal to try and get pressure with four rushers if you can.

It seems to me we have run more man this year and used stunts. Could just be a sign of better pressure.

Zone blitz is a tactic we have employed but never been our scheme. At least not since Capers.

We've never done it so much as to call it our scheme.

Zone blitz is a scheme, not a play.

It's the same scheme the Steelers use. More importantly it was the scheme employed by Jim Johnson, Ron Rivera's primary defensive mentor when he started coaching. Johnson also mentored Sean McDermott.

The Double A Gap blitz is a staple of it, and one that we ran pretty frequently under both McDermott and Steve Wilks.

    • Just like WR, you thin ignite and then suffer an injury and you are scrambling.  Any RB could have run through some of those those holes though and maybe you don’t get the same xtra yards but you are getting yardage.  It is the pass catching they will miss the most.
    • Without Sanders, they are stil catching balls. Sanders is about a giveaway to it will be a pass play.   Also, hoping we see the competition at RB keep both guys on their toes.
    • I was talking about pre season hype vs now.  They were talking about him being the best route runner on the team and being unguardable.  Putting people in the blender.  He has had 1 catch the last two games, and before that it was 2 per game. I like Renfrow, but it seems him and Bryce are not on the same page.
