I distinctly remember games against the Saints in which he was actually a hindrance; when he wasn't having success, the dude would take plays off. Some weeks he took entire games off.

Dude was a beast all throughout 2013, what are you talking about?  He was a beast against the run (might've actually been the top 4-3 DE against the run that year as well), constantly got pressure even when he didn't get sacks, got double teamed regularly, and was able to effectively rush the passer from inside in our NASCAR package which allowed an extra edge rusher.  Dude was straight up dominant that year.  Also, we only played the Saints twice in 2013, like we normally do, and one of those games was one of the best games of his career here.

If by hindrance you mean won the division by himself, then you’re right.  http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000307726/Hardy-s-seven-sacks-in-the-last-two-games

Valid, which likely means we won't put in a waiver claim on him either.

There are, of course, other teams that have more cap space than us. I know he wants to play for "a contender" but lots of guys say that shortly before declaring that the team who offered them the most money is a legitimate contender.

That's true and money is always a factor. I think we have a small chance.  I think Irvin is only looking at a 1 year deal though wherever he goes.  Two million prorated for 8 games and the playoffs is a reasonable offer. He may take it or he may not. Either way hes playing for his next contract this offseason and we're a good fit for him.  The biggest issue to me is that Irvin seems to be a west coast guy...but we're only talking half a season so I say we give it a shot.

Irvin isn't a DE. Perhaps he could be used to fill in on obvious pass rush downs but he would need to be signed for well below what he would likely ask for. He didn't fit in with the Raiders 4-3 base scheme so he was released. He won't fit in here either.

more than not fitting...he was expensive.  And Oak is burning it all down.

We play in the NFCS.  He might not be a an every down DE but on 3rd and long vs Brees, Ryan, etc? I’d take a specialist.   We already are upping Peppers’ reps out of that role.

The year Greg Hardy had 16 sacks, in 12 games he was a non-factor.

Not true at all. He was DOMINANT against the run and in coverage (for a DL) which was crucial for our D scheme that year, in addition to applying consistent pressure (whether he got the sacks or not).

Hardy was dominant.  He wasn’t consistent though.

Peppers/Hardy types? No. Stop. I'm no world is Greg Hardy an equivalent to Julius Peppers.

Obviously not, but Hardy's 2013 was on par with any season Pep has had. Difference is Hardy had 1 amazing year his entire career and Pep has had nearly 20.
