Silver Lining: The Saints almost drafted Patrick Mahomes

Way back in April 2017 during the NFL Draft, the draft board was falling precisely in the New Orleans Saints favor. Player after player was coming off the board, and they finally were going to be in a position to draft a Quarterback with all the tools to replace future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. Patrick Mahomes was the number one player on the Saints big board, and as Mahomes seemed certain to fall out of the top ten, the Saints, picking 11, informed Drew Brees of their intentions as a good gesture.

Why not tell Brees, after all? As much as he has done for that franchise, he deserves that respect, right? Well a funny little thing happened after the Saints told Mr. Brees. Word is Brees' agent just so happened to place some phone calls around the league, informing other teams of the Saints intentions. It was already known Buffalo wanted to go defense at number 10, so there was a market to jump ahead of the Saints and snag Mahomes before Sean Payton could get his filthy hands on him.

As we now know, the Chiefs seized the opportunity to steal Mahomes from New Orleans, cementing the young stars future in Kansas City. Drew Brees meanwhile signed a $50 million dollar, two year deal this past March, a contract he surely would not have received had Mahomes been waiting in the wings.

Funny how things work out. I'm sure as hell glad we don't have 10+ years of going against that kid with the funny voice and rocket arm twice a year.

Did you make most of that up? Lol. Mahomes would have been the pick if Lattimore went off the board. I've never heard any of the rest of that.

It's true. There's nothing far fetched at all in there. Brees wanted a player that would help the team immediately, plus it helps when he pockets tens of millions of dollars as a result of the Saints not having a backup plan. If Payton doesn't do the courtesy of telling Brees their intention to draft Mahomes, he might be your starting QB.

Care to provide a credible link? Because ~90% of that post, you’re full of :poo: on.

whether true or not, it doesn't really matter. brees is no where close to retiring.

i'd much rather go up against a young QB who's still prone to mistakes as opposed to a veteran HOF'er who'll likely have the saints contending for a superbowl and ass raping us over the next 5 years, at which point cam will be in his mid 30's likely hitting the tail end of his career b/c of this read option college BS that we're still running and a coach who constantly chooses to use cam as a scapegoat for his boneheaded decisions and a league who clearly has no interest in protecting cam at which point we'll be grooming a young rookie QB who'll take at least 5-7 years to develop at which point mahomes will be in his mid 30's on the verge of retirement.

our window will open again in 2035

So that’s why you should never show “respect” to anyone over money,..

Drew is told out of respect but the agent goes and sabotages it?

That causes situations like Getts and Steve Smith and why people are shocked that there is no notice or warning or “respect”

when you show respect to people you just get screwed.

im happy it happened to the Saints but that will cause more “disrespect” to happen to others

This conspiracy theory really doesn't make any sense. I get telling Brees out of respect, but why would you do it until you're on the clock? Anything can happen until you're on the clock, so why potentially ruffle any feathers until you actually know you have an opportunity to draft the kid? Once you're on the clock, give Drew a call. If he doesn't pick up, well you tried.

exactly, Saints were also going to take Reuben Foster, but the 49ers jumped in front of them to #31 leaving the Saints to take Ryan Ramczyk. Nobody knows what's going to happen until you're on the clock

pretty sure the Saints were going to take Marshon Lattimore since he wasn't expected to drop out of the top 10 like he did

Payton has repeatedly said Lattimore was top 3 on their entire board. Has also said with Mahomes and Lattimore there, they knew they would get one of the players they thought highly of, depending on which was picked at 10.

and looking back you couldn't have gone wrong with either pick, but truth be told I was a little nervous of Mahomes coming from that Texas Tech offense

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
