2019 Cap space and roster decisions.

It appears we will have 26-28 million in cap space heading into next year committed to 35 players(cap space number explained at bottom of this thread). There are other ways to increase that number. Let’s take a look at that first.

Amount saved per player if cut:

Torrey Smith: 5 Million

D’anorris Searcy 2.9 Million

Ross Cockrell: 2.4 Million

Munnerlyn:  2 Million

* that number could be juiced a little more if these guys are designated as post June 1st cuts but that would require mortgaging some of the 2020 cap and doesn’t seem necessary.

Releasing Smith and Munnerlyn alone would push us to the 33-35 Million range. If we give up on the injured guys in Searcy and Cockrell we have a chance at exceeding 38-40 MM in cap space.

Then there is Olsen. If he retires we can ask that he repay 7.4 MM in signing bonus money via arbititrarion, that would otherwise become dead money on our cap.  This will be an interesting thing to watch moving forward. Worst case scenario is he retires and we are unable to recoup the signing bonus money and we are left with 300k in dead cap.

Lastly there is Matt Kalil. We’d incur more dead money than cap relief if we cut him this year unless we designated as a post June 1st cut. If we take the hit all in 1 year we lose 2.5million in cap space for 19 but his contract will not haunt us in 2020. The 2nd option would be to designate him as a post June 1st cut  and save 7.2 MM in cap space this year but incur 9.5 in dead money in 2020. Either way it cost us a net of 2.5MM roughly to cut him before the 2020 season.

Adversely if we wait til 2020 to cut him we could save 6 million against that years cap. Question is are we better off buying the extra roster spot for 2.5MM or enduring another season with him and save a full 6MM a year later?

Here’s a look at the biggest free agents we have upcoming for 2019

Thomas Davis, Ryan Kalil,Peppers,Funchess, Eric Reid,Daryl Williams, Chris Clark and Mike Adams.

Heres a link to all 2019 free agents league wide :https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/

Thats not a very inspiring list upon first glance. All this cap space and I’m not sure it will help us improve the team too much due to the weak free agency class. Things can change quickly as other teams make cuts but as of now not a very strong looking class of players becoming available.

If we miss the playoffs we are staring at a draft position of 16-20.

Cap space explained:

According to spotrac.com we are currently looking at having 23 million in cap space. overthecap.com has us at 28 million. They both have our cap liabilities and number of players the same. 164 MM to 35 players. The difference I’m seeing is Spotrac does not have any roll over money from this year, where as the NFLPA website says we have 3.4 million to roll over into next years cap. That puts us closer to the $28MM in cap space that Overthecap is showing.

Frankly, Searcy and Cockrell are bargains for us.  You aren't going to find better players for less.  Yes, they're hurt, but they haven't shown themselves to be injury prone - it's just (*@# that happens.

T. Smith and Munnerlyn, yea, I think they're gone.

Earl thomas and demarcus lawerence sound pretty damn good to me man.  Not that the cowboys would give up their number one edge rusher but stranger things have happened. We could make the cap space for at least one of them easily.

Should definetely be an offseason focusing on shoring up both oline and dline.

No one is mentioning the fact that the team could add 9 million to the cap cutting shaq thompson... sure unlikely, but impossible with a new staff?

That's actually not a terrible idea.  You could definitely replace his production for less than 9 million.  It wouldn't actually free up 9 million, since you will need to spend to replace him.  The question would be what the cost of a replacement might be.

We can pay somebody 1 or 2 mil to do the same exact stuff that Shaq has been doing for his tenture here. Servicable LB thats not the best in pass coverage but can track down ball carrier.

He's definitely not playing like someone worth 9 mil vs the cap.

If Hurney is there, all those players will stand pat. I think he hates cutting people unless it's CJ. Every player listed above needs to be let go except for Eric Reid. We won't find another safety like this. Funchess can be replaced with a veteran possession receiver for cheap. We have our two speedsters. Roll with Thomas at TE. But we need the best DE in the first round, OL in 2nd, and we need veteran leadership in the secondary. That's why Reid needs to stay. However, with Davis leaving, we need another big LB so don't be surprised depending on who's coaching, we don't get the best OLB in the draft.

    • He only wants to be traded because it's the Vikings who are calling. If he didn't want to be here, he could have retired, instead he took a pay raise to come back for another season.  I get it, it's an opportunity that he'd like to take, but we shouldn't cut off our nose to spite our face because he now wants to jump at this opportunity less than two weeks before the season starts. I'm not against trading him, I'm just against trading him for a return that doesn't help our team as much as having him on the roster would.  I'll put it this way, if a 5th is the best we can get for him from the Vikings and he's now dug in on not wanting to stay this year, I'm saying screw you and trading him to any of the other 30 teams besides the Vikings for the best offer we can get. He was perfectly happy here a week ago, if the Vikings soured him on that and then want to get him for peanuts, then screw them both.
    • Yes and no, he wants to go back and his wife most definitely wants to go back. He took a bunch of team mates to Minny and has worked out with JJ two offseasons in a row. It's where both him and his wife are from.    The money was basically a please come back and help Bryce. Pretty please...here's some more money.    Now he's agreed to a paycut to go back to the Vikings.
    • Because he won't be here next year, we aren't winning this year and we need to see if Renfrow or Horn can be that guy going forward. If Bryce isn't good enough to do poo without AT we need to find that out this year as well. I'm fine keeping him but his role needs to be slowly reduced throughout the year anyway so we know what we have for the future
