IMO, I think Gettleman was forced into it because he had made a name for himself as being an asshole in negotiations, not just with Norman, but in many cases, he likely made absurd offers and offended other potential free agents.  Word gets around, that's known, and because of that IMO, it lead to even decent free agents staying away leaving him to do his "splash move" as signing Matt Kalil.  He knew he had to show some sign of trying to fix the line after botching it in 2016, and this is what happened.

Yeah, that is a horseshit argument IMO. I think that after he left the position in shambles most of his time here that he had to make a desperate choice, much like he did when he cut Norman and drafted 2 CB's. Funny thing is that he had actually drafted a capable LT in 2015, yet he still made that signing. The "forced" moves by any of our GM's(Hurney fanboys use this, Gettleman fanboys use this) just never makes sense to me. I don't deny that owners play a role in those decisions but they damn sure don't negotiate these dumpster fire contracts. Kalil got one of those. With better options available, at that.

you should be mad at JR, he is the one who wants to run a "family first" team and likely pushed DG into that signing along with extending Olsen and TD for their 9th contract extensions

Stop with the conspiracies. That was all Gettleman.

Him looking to release Olsen and Davis led to his firimg though. JR didn't want another Smith, Norman, Gross, etc., etc. situation.

Do you pay attention to what you type?

DG was never looking to release Olsen nor Davis.  He didn't release Norman either.

Dude, can you read? I never said he released Norman.

That is what you typed.  He wasn't looking to release Olsen nor Davis.  He did release Smith and to a certain extent Gross (mutually agreed upon)...so when you toss Norman in there with that sentence, you are saying they are all ended with the same treatment...a release.  That isn't accurate, just like the "looking to release Olsen and Davis" isn't accurate.

I still dont know honestly if Daryl William's is a good fit at LT as I think hes better fit for the right, but we shall see.  FWIW, I was more looking into the assertion that we dont try to sign certain guys (why did we sign kalil and not sign whitworth).  The fact of the matter is there also needs to be mutual interest, and my personal belief was gettleman left free agents salty, but it truly could be many reasons including maybe the guy likes cali, wanted a bigger market or just wants to go to Disneyland.

He might be a better fit at right tackle but he is a much, much, much, much better fit at LT than Matt Kalil and Chris Clark.

I will give that there may not have been mutual interest in Whitworth. We don't know if either we or he had any and we will likely never know. I suppose it doesn't really matter at this point. Hearing either scenario wouldn't remove Matt Kalil's bloated contract.

    • Yes, it tells me they’ve improved significantly from sitting at what, 30-31st in the league on the PP to 11th now.
    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space.
