Draft Order Analysis (Merry Christmas)

Leeroy Jenkins Ph.D.

My Christmas gift to you, huddle is a quick look at the draft order and how week 17 may affect our current position.  The first four picks are pretty set in stone.

1. Cardinals (3-12)

2. 49ers (4-11)

3. Raiders (4-11)

4. Jets (4-11)

Draft position 5-9 are all held by teams with a 5-10 record.  Now, the most interesting thing about this next part is the strength of schedule.  The Panthers currently have a combined SOS of .484.  Every team currently at 5-10 has a higher strength of schedule than the Panthers, meaning we could technically jump all of them in the draft order.  Here are the next 5 teams and their current SOS.

5. Lions (.489)

6. Giants (.500)

7. Bills (.505)

8. Buccs (.516)

9. Jaguars (.530)

Next, we have a group of 4 teams, all current tied at 6-10.  Again, the Panthers have the lowest current SOS.

10. Panthers (.484)

11. Falcons (.497)

12. Broncos (.533)

13. Bengals (.533)

Finally we have the Packers with the tie, and then the Racial Slurs and Dolphins at 7-8.  Both the Dolphins and Racial Slurs have lower current SOS than us, so if we were to win and they were to lose, they would move ahead of us in the draft order.

14. Packers (.497)

15. Dolphins (.478)

16. Racial Slurs (.464)

So, worst case scenario (for draft picks that is), if the Panthers win and the Packers, Dolphins, Falcons, Bengals, Broncos, and Racial Slurs lose, the Panthers could be picking 16th in the draft. Which is technically possible, because none of these teams play each other.

Now for the fun scenario.  If the following scenarios were to occur.

Bills (5-10) beat the Dolphins (7-8)

Lions (5-10) beat the Packers (6-8-1)

Jaguars (5-10) beat the Texans

Giants (5-10) beat the Cowboys

Bucs (5-10) beat the Falcons (6-9)

Given the Panthers would have the lowest SOS of all teams tied at 6-10, they would jump to the 5th pick in the draft.

So, depending on the outcome of a handful of  games this weekend, the Panthers could pick anywhere between 5th or 16th.

@Leeroy Jenkins Ph.D. Are you sure about us having a worse SOS than the Lions? The site linked in the other threads has Atlanta and Detroit with worse projected SOS. Remember we play the Saints at hopefully 14-2 so our SOS jumps more than anyone else. Obviously their projected SOS could be wrong but I don’t think yours has week 17.

That site has us as barely possible for 5/6. I think 8 is likely since Jax will lose and Detroit will likely finish with a worse SOS. I think we can only pass one of Tampa and Atlanta with our end of season SOS.

Yes you are correct. This is based on current SOS through 16 weeks not accounting for week 17.

Winning this week would be a massive letdown after our steadfast commitment to sucking all the ass in the second half of the season. Gotta see this suckfest to the end at this point. Zero upside to winning in N.O.

Unfortunately we all know what being a Panthers fan means.  Prepare for the letdown.  Whatever the worst thing that can happen, ......................  You guys and girls know the  rest.  I am prepared to draft around 15 or something after we win the game on a hail Mary with no time left.  All this suck and suffering for nothing.  Please fire Ron and give us something for this shitty season.  Pretty please.

- Suck and lose for weeks

- Get eliminated from playoffs

- In danger of being fired

- Nothing to gain by winning

Uh oh, thats just the type of scenario where Ron pulls out a win and 'ends on a high note.'   But, at least we would end the sweep.

eh, who am I kidding, that poo aint happening

I’d be for winning if the Aints lost to the Steelers and we could spoil their home field but with that locked up now we absolutely have to lose. Nothing to gain in winning. I hope Aints play their starters and whoop us while losing a key player in the process

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
