2019 cap space and possible cuts

Recommended Posts

We currently projected to have around $25M of cap space with 2019 projected increase

The top 12 earners:

Cam Newton $24M or 13% of cap

Luke Kueckly $17M or 9% of cap

KK Short $17M or 9% of cap

Matt Kalil $12.5 or 6.5% of cap

Mario Addison $10M or 5% of cap

Poe $9.3M or 5% of cap

Shaq Thompson $9M or 5% of cap

Trai Turner $8.8M of 4.6% of space

Greg Olsen $7M or 4% of cap space

Torrey Smith $5M or 3% of cap space

Captain $5M or 3% of cap space

Players likely to be released:

Mario Addison 32 years old next year. $7.4M in savings.

Torrey Smith $5M in savings

Searcy $3M in savings

Captan $2M in savings

Crockell $2.4M in savings

We will have around $45-$50M in March to work with.

The way contracts are structured... no one else from top 12 earners can get cut due to dead money for exception of Shaq Thompson and Cam Newton.  If we release Thompson (doubt) and trade/release Cam (highly doubt it). We can have $75-$80M in cap space.  If Tepper wants to go in all out rebuilding mode, that certainly can be an option.

Matt Kalil, Poe, Olsen are all unreleasable in 2019 due to dead money their contracts carrying but all releasable after 2019.

Only way I see Addison being cut unless a superatar is linedup

Right now

Only Addison and Haynes are signed next year.  And Haynes wasnt even active more than 2-3 games this year

After Pittsburg game, Addison got only 0.5 sack and was unable to put any pressure on opposing QBs.  I think Addison has hit the wall...  he’s a smalish DE who relies on speed to get around tackles... unfortunately speed is one of the first things to go when you hit 30.  Panthers want to get younger and faster...

Can someone please give me some clarity on what happens if Greg Olsen retires NOT because of injury. I’ve read several conflicting things and believe he will easily be healthy and will seriously consider taking a broadcaster role

We are getting all cap space back and he will require to pay us back all of signing bonus.... $11M to be exact.  Hurney, the genius...  basically gave him 2 years extension and 60% of it was signing bonus with one check.  Olsen contract goes into effect in March.  I doubt he will give back $11M check back to Panthers.  The Panthers will cut Olsen next season... he will keep extra $4M and go to broadcasting.  This year it makes zero sense for both parties to separate.  Hurney is being Hurney... giving crazy money to aging player because he’s a friend.

Appreciate the facts. But you honestly don’t think he’d leave for a broadcasting job? He’s made plenty of money and it’s not like he’d be paid chump change in a broadcasting job. I think this is extremely likely. Why would he want to go through all the rehab needed of a broken foot for just one more year when several of his ‘peers’ are retiring.

I kind of hope he retires. He hasn't been the same since the foot injury. At this point Ian Thomas is a better option on the field. His speed and ability to break tackles is far much better than Olsen right now.

I get that

But with him gone, we only have a undersized Marquis Haynes under contract. who could barely get activated this year under this terrible group.

And probably another kid from this upcoming draft.

That cap room means nothing in a weak FA class. The only big name I have heard floated around for us is J. Clowney. Even he is a gamble.

Who else noteworthy is available that would have an impact for us?

Although not probable it is possible the Redskins release Norman.  He would have to come down off a 14 mill cap hit for me to want him but the Skins may move on...found this:

They could elect to release him. They would incur a dead cap charge of $6 million but save a net of $8.5 million in cap space. If they want to spread out the dead cap charge they could designate him as a post-June 1 cut and create $11.5 million in additional 2019 cap space while pushing $3 million of dead cap to 2020.

Josh Norman is not something I would categorize as a big signing. Im talking who are the big names on the FA market this year?

    • It wasn’t completely his fault, but outside of two throws and one or two scrambles he didn’t do much to help. His accuracy was all over the place, numerous passes that were placed poorly and didn’t give the receiver a good chance to catch the ball or do anything with it after. He also continues to display terrible pocket awareness. Even the sacks could have been avoided, they weren’t immediate like the pressure we got on Shough at times. Bryce just often has no feel for pressure and stands there waiting to get sacked after numerous seconds have passed.
    • I really fuging hate this era in so many ways.  I look at those Adin Ross and Neon kids, and I just wonder why tf are they famous?  Why would anyone be desperate enough to gain THAT audience that they’d risk money, career, disciplinary action to go up there and associate with those fuging dweebs?  And back in my day, racist peers got their ass beat.  And not endorsing or approving bully culture, but checks and balances and all…  had those two been bullied, or at the very least humbled, they wouldn’t be famous and glorified for being the fuging idiots they are now.  It seriously pisses me off… they both have done and said multiple, openly racist stuff and major media keeps pushing them, talking about them, and propping them up… and then dummies like Puka who don’t need the platform or exposure lend their celebrity to them.  fuging idiot… and even the other streamers, I don’t get - Speed, Kai…  I don’t understand making nobodies famous at all, but there is at least entertainment value to some degree there, and I could see how young, impressionable kids would find them something to aspire to (sadly), or view as “cool.”  But Ross and Neon?  They’re just shitty, shitty nerds with big ass mouths. I’ve went back recently and watched some classics (in two very different eras and categories 😂)  like Robocop and Idiocracy.  And what I find fascinating is how both movies illustrate how stupid society became by showing what the citizenry is entertained by.  In both, society became anti-intellectual and the citizenry were entertained by lowest denominator, primal-type absurdity - poo like, “Ouch! My Balls!”  Or on Robocop, a guy is a watching a show where they are smashing cakes on ladies’ breasts and then a guy says a line as the camera zooms in like, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” and the audience thinks it’s hilarious.  That’s where I feel like we are now.  Like who watches that clip with Puka and thinks any of that poo is funny or cool?  If I was Puka, I’d honestly be wondering why tf I’m hanging out with these beta ass, racist, cretin ass weirdos.
    • 7 wins this year and some of those against really good teams and yall think Canales might get fired? Lol Good luck getting a better coach in here if that happens.
