Would you draft this guy?

I’m not against a defensive tackle— i just think it will not have an impact on our team like a Left Tackle or serious corner back upgrade.

A defensive end or 3-4 type outside linebacker like a Melvin Ingram or Kalil Mack would impact us well too.(scary because I just don’t know if Ron is like Wade Phillips or the Chargers that can adjust to their player groups instead of being stuck to a system)

Now, if we trade Short and pick up some picks— sure, but I would still want a DE/DT tweener than can get to the quarterback. There is different information regarding trading Short and how it affects the cap etc— so it’s unclear to me how beneficial this would be.

After reading the scouting reports I’m on the Jawann Taylor pick for number 16.

Greg Little, what stands out on his reports is what I hate the most— reads like KB or something—- “doesn’t play to his potential consistently, questionable effort but has the talent to be one of the best Left Tackles” yuck, not my thing.

Jonah the other tackle, his reads like he’s more or a right tackle and could be a 2nd round pick. Picking him at 16 is not BPA and should be a 2nd pick— although since he’s currently 3rd on most prospect rankings I doubt he makes it to our 2nd pick.

so I want Jawann Taylor if he makes it to 16. I’ll keep digging to find what I like for my alternate choices.

Who would want to give up picks for a 30 year old (in Feb) DT coming off a down year with a giant contract?  I don't mean to pick on you specifically, because we have all made the "let's trade player X for picks."

It sounds so easy to do it, but the practicality is it's much harder to trade those kinds of players.

As for the OP, I'd rather have a better impact player at 16 instead of another DT.  More and more, I think we have to draft OL help and some edge pass rushers.

Buffalo seems willing to take anything we throw at them.

Yeh, DT is my least favorite 1st round pick— that I have said repeatedly.

for short I also said it’s unclear what trading him would do— I’ve seen everything from tons of cap saved to nothing.

Personally if it picked us up even 5 million and then cleared him off for 2020 for a 2nd round pick id be happy—

im not just throwing spit to the wind there, if it screws our cap for 2 or more years then we stuck with him and have to hope he gets it back together.

Yikes!

He11 no to Taylor for me.  Aome people are just banking pn him because his athletic ability and tools.  Most everything ive seen outside of Walterfootball all agree that his future is OG or RT.  There is a Florida kid every year that rises due to athletic ability (see Humphries in Arizona) Taylor got beat like a Drum against Michigan without Gary.

https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2018/12/30/florida-ot-jawaan-taylor-to-enter-2019-nfl-draft/amp/

"At 6-foot-5 and 334 pounds, Taylor’s size, technical ability in pass protection along with his intelligence as a blocker is why he’s seen his stock rise. The former Florida product has all the tools to become a starting NFL offensive lineman, and he should be selected within the top-100."

everyone is just banking on his "tools"

https://thedraftnetwork.com/2018/08/23/2019-nfl-draft-player-profile-jawaan-taylor/

"PROS: Size and frame are excellent. Might project better to guard in the NFL. Good enough athlete in small spaces, but doesn’t have the explosiveness or range to stop pure speed."

"CONS: Range in his set points is a big concern. Speed and bend were issues for him to control last season. Doesn’t gain much ground in his kickstep and is constantly in recovery mode to the edge. Not an explosive mover, consistently struggled against better athletes on the outside. Labored mightily when mirroring inside counter moves.

Pad level is high and hands aren’t sudden of impactful enough as a run blocker. Too often left his frame exposed and got tossed around as a result. Zone schemes did not do him any favors. Creating movement at the point of attack on solo blocks simply didn’t happen. Leg drive is minimal, fights to stalemates at best. Struggled to reach targets in space on a regular basis."

I hear ya, and it’s early opinions— right now I like him. His scouting reports look good to me. I don’t watch college football so I’ll watch highlights and hate reels on him later if he’s still in the mix in a couple months.

I wouldnt touch him until rd3

And again.  There is a Florida kid that is hyped up every year like this because his "tools"

Perfect example is this guy, who at the same poit was hyped to the same point, same writeups etc.  then went in the 4th to the raiders

Well every year there’s missed drafts on that both ways— he may be a Jason Peters or a Matt Kalil— just don’t know yet.

The things like I like besides “tools” is the high motor— they say he never slows down.

those are 2 things you can’t teach— tools and motor.

everything else can be improved.

Again

Same exact writeups this guy had

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/david-sharpe?id=2558145&id=2558145

Then he fell to the 4th to the raiders.

You dont just draft on potential in this league.

Thats how you get the Texans with Davenport getting Watson killed.  The Cardinals OL in worse shape than our etc.

oh I agree, but then again we wouldnt have drafted Cam if you never draft on potential.

Draft picks i tend to lean towards motor, character, and "tools" first.  Theres a saying that you can teach an athlete to be a football player, but not a football player to be an athlete.

Anyway, its way to early to argue on whether Jawann Taylor is a good pick in the 4th round or 1st round. Right now hes a top 15 pick, and by far the best scouting report for me on the others, so hes my today choice.  Next month i may want a wide receiver 1st ha, or a corner--  or possibly a DE.

Who knows, 2 months from now we might be arguing from 2 different sides, you want this guy and I dont.

OP was thinking he might drop to the 2nd round. Probably not now. In the 1st round I would want a outside pass rusher...
