Mississippi State and the NFL draft

I'm biased but as a season ticket holder, I get to watch MSU play most of their games. This relates to the Panthers due to having numerous players in positions of need.

Jeffrey Simmons. He is the best DT in the draft. Period. He is listed in most top 10 boards and after the combine will leave no doubt. He is Kris Jenkins with a true work ethic and will be a Fletcher Cox/Chris Jones clone. Should be off the board in the first 12 picks.

Montez Sweat. He is dynamic at DE and is proving it in the Senior Bowl practices. As has been reported in several threads on the board, he is a little heavier than previously noted. He is moving into the top 20 selections and could be ours at 16.

Elgton Jenkins. Rated by most as the top C in the draft. Is showing that in bowl practice. He is probably a second round pick at this point.

Johnathan Abrams. SS and is a first rounder in McShay's draft. He is in the Mike Mitchell head hunter type and dynamic in run support. Can use some fine tuning in coverage but I see him as a second round pick.

Gerri Green. Hes a hybrid DE/OLB and is having a good showing in bowl practice. Probably a 3rd to 4th round guy.

Jamal Peter's CB. Has had an up and down career but is probably a 4th to 5th round selection.

Most of these are defensive guys but that is to be expected: MSU finished number 1 in the nation in 8 or 9 defensive categories. There is the possibility that one of these guys may get drafted by us. And as a midlevel SEC team, most folks outside the scouting departments are just now starting to pay attention. It just happens that alot of these guys are highly rated in our positions of need.

Being an Auburn fan, I’ve been singing the praises of Sweat and Simmons for awhile.

On Jamal Peters. I love converting CBs to S and with his size, could he be a “TE eraser” type box safety. Haven’t seen enough to know if he could handle it.

What about OT Gregg Little? 2nd round? Isn't he projected as a left tackle?

Little was one of the top rated OT out of high school and was better last year than this one. He doesn't handle speed rushers well at this point and may be better suited for RT than LT.

He has the size and speed to play S. That's where he started until being moved to corner. He is 6'2" and 215 to 220. I think that may be his best NFL position

The thing is with Moton and Williams at the tackles. I dont see a need at tackle. I feel like the edge and safety are bigger needs as of right now

We can really use a G and C but DL and S seems to be our biggest need

Safety has been one of our biggest needs for the better part of two decades now. That's what happens when you have back to back long-term head coaches who place very little value in the safety positions.

    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
    • I don’t know about shadowing and all that, but according to this, whatever we are doing is working
