Notable from OTAS - Luke Kuechly had a pick to open, and a pick near the end of the workout. Curtis Samuel stretched out for a highlight reel deep ball from Allen; landed hard and was really slow to get up/trainers attended (maybe got the wind knocked out of him).

Curtis Samuel with the play of the day, getting by the secondary and diving for a deep ball from Kyle Allen. Was a little slow to get up. Teammates applauded the effort.

Hope him is OK.

David Tepper is out at OTAs today - first thing he does is check out progress on his new bubble.

every time I see progress being made on this I keep asking the question, "why did it have to take so long for this to happen?" it was a need. the money was there. obviously the space was there. so why?

i'm just glad tepper is getting poo done.

thoughts from Max Henson...much more at the link

https://www.panthers.com/news/ota-observations-splash-plays-from-kuechly-and-samuel

-Tuesday’s practice was a hot one. Charlotte has been experiencing a serious heat wave over the last week or so, and even a morning session with an 8:30 start time felt steamy. “This feels like something I don’t want to say,” linebacker Luke Kuechly remarked. “Starts with ‘S’ and ends with ‘Burg.’”

-Kuechly started the team period with a bang. The All-Pro linebacker picked off a pass from Kyle Allen over the middle and took it to the house. Kuechly later nabbed a second interception, this time corralling a screen pass that wide receiver DJ Moore bobbled.

First-round pick Brian Burns was all over a reverse to Samuel, stopping the play behind the line. Good to see the young edge rusher hold his ground and not get fooled. Burns later showed great pursuit chasing down Moore after the wide receiver caught a short pass and was weaving his way into the secondary.

he was probably ok within a minute or two of hitting the ground. getting the wind knocked out is no fun and hurts, but it doesn't take long at all to get back up and moving like nothing happened. last time it happened to me i fell off a roof of a house I was working on (the ladder was sitting on kind of slick concrete and I forgot to be careful getting on it) and got the wind knocked out of me. I was lucky I didn't get hurt worse than what it was. the lady who lived in the house saw it happen and she was freaking out, but as soon as I got the wind back in me I was laughing. I was shocked and relieved and just a little sore, but still laughing and a lot of it had to do with the lady's reaction. point is, it feels painful when it happens and it sure looks like something is really wrong, but it's not that big of a deal.

this is exactly the kind of thing I want to and was expecting to see from Burns in his first few practices. Samuel and Dj aren't easy guys to chase down or keep contained.

Jourdan's observations...more at the link

Cornerback Donte Jackson stretched out for an acrobatic one-handed interception in the first hour of drills. Jackson, one of the Panthers’ most exciting rookies last season, is entering his second year in the NFL with confidence — though Rivera was quick to keep him grounded after the workout.

“His swagger is getting a little bit more,” Rivera said. “So we’ve got to try to keep that curbed until he gets past his fourth game. Then he’ll be a second-year player. He’s still a rookie.”

Linebacker Andre Smith recovered a fumble for what would have been a touchdown in regular play.

Receiver Curtis Samuel had the catch of the day after fully outstretching to reel in a deep ball from Allen, but he landed hard and was slow to get up. Rivera confirmed that Samuel just got the wind knocked out of him.

“You love seeing that, but at the same time you want to be careful,” Rivera said.

    • I just rewatched all the highlights from after Bryce being benched. The Bryce hate needs to calm down a little bit. He showed a ton of potential the back half of the year. Same with Legette. They both made great plays when it mattered and a few mistakes when it counted. If we didn’t have a historically awful defense last year we could have ended even a bit better. Going into a brand new season we should be optimistic at least before game one. 2015 no one expected to go anywhere and the team steam rolled the league. I’m not saying that will happen, but hopefully we made strides to improve on the end of last year. Bryce put both Super Bowl teams in a battle last year and if we had a better D we could have taken them both. So at least look forward to the season and not past the season until it at least begins.
    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
