Please pray for Deshaun Watson.

Bill O’Brien: Matt Kalil is our starting left tackle

Posted by Josh Alper on August 18, 2019, 8:14 AM EDT

Matt Kalil did not start at left tackle for the Texans on Saturday, but he will be in the lineup for Week One.

Roderick Johnson got the start against the Lions with Deshaun Watson at quarterback, which led to questions for head coach Bill O’Brien about the plans for a key spot on an offensive line that the Texans want to be better than the one they put on the field last year. O’Brien said after the game that Kalil “is the starting left tackle.”

Kalil had his foot stepped on during Wednesday’s practice and didn’t practice on Thursday, but O’Brien said that wasn’t the reason he sat out against Detroit.

“I didn’t want him to play,” O’Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “He’ll play next week. Just managing reps throughout the preseason, that’s all that is.”

Kalil didn’t play at all last year because of a knee injury and his play has been shaky when healthy in recent years, which has led some to question the Texans’ belief that he’ll be part of an upgraded blocking group this year. Barring a trade or other acquisition in the near future, it appears that O’Brien and company will take their chances.

It's hilarious that the tweet at the top of the page says kalil is finally injury free. We heard that poo before too, Houston.

It's like a broken record. "I'm the healthiest I have ever been!!!" 2 days later: Kalil misses practice after foot stepped on.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
