Panthers uneasy with Gano

One excellent season does not necessarily make him a kicker worthy of a substantial contract, at least substantial for his position.  That is especially true of a position as fickle as kickers.

The problem with the decision to sign Gano, or anybody for that matter, to a significant contract based on one big season is that means the only factor in determining a player's salary is what they do the year their contract runs out.  Disregarding their entire body of work in favor of looking only at the most recent season is how teams wind up overpaying for players who can never replicate their best season.  Even back to back good to great years is at least a trend.  Two out of the last three would give one optimism.  But one year is just that: one year.

When it comes to effective roster building, contract your performances are one of the biggest booby traps you can spring.

Gano never should have been given that contract in the first place. He torpedoed the 2016 season with that miss in one of the most high stakes games in Panthers history where our QB almost had his brains turned to pudding.

Anyone who searches their own name on Twitter to block people that say something mean should not be trusted to make high stakes kicks

Last year would be a pretty good swansong for him anyway. Got the record and plaque in the building, still justifiable cut since he missed stuff he should have made.

It's an old saying that the length of the average NFL veteran's career is "one year too long".

Very few of them go out on top. Overstaying their welcome by a year or two is the norm.

We botched it when we cut Butker and signed Gano to a ridiculous contract comparable to his success. If Gano didn’t have all that guaranteed money stick to him, this wouldn’t even be a discussion.

No, we didn’t. Gano has been better than Butker the last two years and has a far stronger leg. The only downside was that we paid more.

Some people would say it already has cost us, and not just cap space.

And yeah, there's an argument to be made...

Cost us what, exactly? Gano was the most accurate kicker in 2017 and missed only two field goals in 2018, which is forgivable considering he made a 63-yard game winner.

Cost us having a younger, cheaper, equally reliable kicker who might have anchored us for the next decade.

Gano was already a case of choosing the short-term over the long term. If it turns out that he now can't go, that decision looks even worse (to the nth degree).
