Panthers uneasy with Gano

So Gano being better is just another fantasy.

While Gano pulled downs around 17.2M

Over last 2 seasons Gano absolutely has been better.  Both have played very well and the edge is slight, but Gano has the edge.

At this point the money is a sunk cost and all the whining in the world won't change that.

What are you going to do right now?

Are you really willing to assume the risk of sending a Pro Bowl calibre kicker with over 140 NFL games and more than 230 made-FG's under his belt packing and take your chances with a guy who has never made an NFL field goal and has fought the yips in the past....is this the proper path in your opinion?

Kyle Bailey is very close to Va. Tech and has followed this kid closely and he says he worries the yips will come back under regular season pressure.

Gano was 87% on FG's last year.

How many times has Rivera also opted not to even bring Gano out in some past games because he didn't trust him from that range? Why do the Gano Stan's never bring that up?

Like I said in the other thread, I think the situation is playing out where we carry two kickers on the very first 53 and then immediately IR Gano with designation to return.  Slye does well, Gano stays on IR.  Slye crashes and burns, we bring Gano back when he's healthy and cut Slye.

If Slye does really well for the entire season, we then cut Gano next spring.

The thread legit could have ended after your comment.  This is the best plan bar none.

Kicking.

Let’s see what an unbiased judge has to say about this top 10 PK stuff. Maybe Gano is in the bottom 10. But look who’s there.

5. Harrison Butker, Chiefs

Despite the fact that he's only been in the NFL for two years, Butker has already proven himself to be one of the best kickers in the league. In two seasons with the Chiefs, Butker has hit 89.9 percent of his field goals (62 of 69), which ranks in the top 10 for all kickers over the past two seasons. The Chiefs have been so impressed with Butker that they actually gave him a four-year extension this offseason even though he still had two years left on his rookie contract. Although Butker isn't at the top of our kicker rankings, he is at the top my personal ranking for best Twitter handle by an NFL player: ButtKicker7.

I’m so glad you disagree with me. Its like a stamp of approval on any statement.

Statistically, Gano has been more accurate than Butker the past few years.

Having said that, Rivera has lost faith in him on numerous occasions in that same time frame. He only trotted him out for 1 50+ yard FG all season in 2017, and then effectively benched him against the Lions last year.

The difference in the accuracy is negligible, and that slight accuracy increase isn't worth the price tag in my opinion.

Would you rather pay 15 million for 95% accuracy, or 0.5 Million for 90% accuracy?

You get more bang for your buck with Butker. Even if he misses it, you might curse, but you won't be cursing the fact that he's the highest paid kicker in the league and missing it.

As a vt fan alum myself, yeah Slye scares me as an NFL kicker. He has the record due to longevity as the starter mostly and for needing to score more points as they were not really good on D like before. So yeah he has VT's record in points, but he wasn't exactly trustworthy from 40-50 yards, where the NFL kickers need to be pretty damn effective.

Just an FYI, there is no designation to return when you are placed on IR. Until you decide to bring someone back you are just on IR. The decision happens at the come back point and you just have two return tickets. If it’s before the season then you cannot bring the person back at all.

Which if I'm understanding you correctly, means that we'd basically have to go into the season with two kickers on the active roster if we want that to be an option.

Cue the rage...

I’m skeptical as well. And this isn’t the same as the Gano/Butker decision. Gano only had 800k of dead cap and a 3.2 base salary back then.  He was an easy decision to cut then. This time we are paying the money and have an unproven PK, if we go that route. No good options in this. Just levels of bad, because of money.
