Veteran QB Options

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Joe Person's latest Athletic article argues that the Panthers are most likely to stay with the backup quarterbacks they have now. He does, however, allow for a little speculation about possible veteran cuts.

Here are a couple of note...

Teddy Bridgewater: The Turner connection makes this one obvious. That said, I haven't watched his preseason performances this year, but his Week 17 "audition" looked like refried ass. It'd be pretty weird to think of Bridgewater replacing a guy who outplayed him in Kyle Allen.

CJ Beathard: Bobby Beathard is the reason that Marty Hurney has a job in the NFL. The Panthers have Beathard's son - and CJ's uncle - Jeff as part of their scouting staff. Seeing Bobby's grandson signed to the roster wouldn't be a huge stretch, and while he certainly doesn't appear to be starter material, I wouldn't call him talentless.

The Rest: Brian Hoyer, Nathan Peterman and Mike "The Neck" Glennon round out Person's list of possible cuts. Yes, he mentions Colin Kaepernick but doesn't talk that much about him other than to mention to Reid connection. Frankly, that's a whole other contentious discussion that I don't care to bring up here especially given that there's already a thread or two devoted to that argument.

...

Looking at this list, I'm not a big Bridgewater fan but I could see it happening. Beathard honestly sounds like an equally plausible option though. Heck, you could make an argument that it's even more likely.

I still ultimately believe the Panthers will just roll with what they have, but if they were to bring in a veteran backup, who would you expect it to be? Who would you prefer?

Start of preseason I felt comfortable not confident in Kyle Allen and Will Grier, I was one of the ones who thought Grier could be the steal of the draft like some analysis said when it happened, but after watching 3 preseason games and how Allen and Grier have struggled I for one am uneasy with our back-up QB situation.  Allen looks like he took a step back and Grier just looks like he hasn't caught up to the NFL yet.  He has athleticism and a great arm but his timing is way off right now.

I wouldn't want to give up a pick or a player for a trade but at this point we NEED to make a move to finalize that back-up QB.  Need to get an experienced guy in there behind Cam and somehow find a way to injury/secure through PUP or IR to keep Grier from being claimed.

Also, we need to add some help to the offensive line.

I can't see Grier being a viable option as a backup this season. Person rightly points out that he's not getting the reps (I think Rivera may have said something like that too) and that probably isn't changing soon.  His true evaluation isn't coming until next year once he's had a full season and offseason under his belt.

Allen has less of an excuse. He's had enough time to adjust to the NFL and has even started an NFL game (arguments over the validity of that game aside). I said when watching that game that he had earned a chance at the backup position, but not the backup position itself. His preseason performance would seem to bear that out.

I do remember someone on here, can't remember who, that had followed Alan for a while said it was his MO to look good for a game or two and then tank. Can't speak to that observation myself oh, but you could argue what we've seen of him so far does kinda fit that profile.

I honestly hope we stay put. If Cam's shoulder doesn't hold up once again we have to start looking at the future of the franchise after Cam. That probably means throwing Grier to the wolves and see if he learns and grows from game experience or if we need to be looking at 1st round QBs for the 2020 draft.

With the line we have in front of him though, isn't that a significant risk of the David Carr effect?

I don't really believe in the David Carr effect. I think guys either have it or they don't and if rough going early on derails them they probably never had it to begin with.

Derek Carr got off to a pretty nice start, but the longer he plays the more he looks like David.

Honestly, I'd stick with who we have right now. If Cam goes down and out longterm, it's probably closing in on the end of the road for him and we're going to need to be looking at a replacement. Grier ain't that guy and I don't think he even could work into being that guy. If Cam goes down, we need to roll with guys that aren't going to end up giving us an 8-8 record and the 16th pick in the draft.

Every one of those guys listed could be a passable back-up QB and they would get us absolutely nowhere, either this year or for the next season. Better to roll the dice and hope Cam stays upright and working through the post-season. If he does, the guys we've got are fine on the bench or in for a series or two, maybe a whole game if necessary.

Taysom Hill is not new to the Saints or having good preseasons.  He had a good preseason last year.  The Saints traded for Bridgewater.

...and then watched him stink when he saw action.

By all accounts, they're invested in Hill. I'm not quite as clear on how invested they are in Bridgewater.

You also have to factor in that we could conceivably offer them something in trade for Bridgewater. His being cut is not the only option.

(I wouldn't, but yeah it's possible; especially with the Turner connection)

I am just not sold on preseason hall of famers.  Or the Saints being stupid and cutting someone they used a 3rd round pick to get.

If they trade him, they will want to recoup that loss.  I don't want to trade anything close to a 3rd round for Bridgewater.

    • Games been a snooze fest of sloppy play
    • ESPN's David Newton: QUARTERBACKS (2): Bryce Young, Andy Dalton A preseason muscle injury to Dalton's right arm could force the Panthers to keep Jack Plummer if the issue gets worse, but that currently doesn't seem to be a concern. For the first time since going No. 1 in 2023, there is no question that Young is the starter after winning two of his final three games last season with 10 touchdowns (7 passing, 3 rushing) and no turnovers. RUNNING BACKS (3): Chuba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle, Trevor Etienne Selecting Etienne in the fourth round out of Georgia makes veteran Raheem Blackshear a likely cut. Etienne has shown in the preseason that he is a capable option as a runner, in addition to being a returner, which has been Blackshear's primary responsibility since 2022. WIDE RECEIVERS (7): Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, Adam Thielen, Jalen Coker, Jimmy Horn Jr., David Moore, Hunter Renfrow This is the most improved group on the team, so keeping seven initially makes sense. If the Panthers go with six it could make coach Dave Canales' favorite, Moore, expendable with Renfrow showing he's close to the level he played in 2021 when he made the Pro Bowl with the Las Vegas Raiders. Brycen Tremayne, who's had an excellent preseason, will be a tough cut. TIGHT ENDS (3): Tommy Tremble, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Mitchell Evans There is anticipation Tremble (back surgery) will be ready for the regular season after coming off the PUP list before the preseason finale, though he could still miss a game or two. Keeping him on the 53-man roster makes sense so she doesn't have to miss the first four games. OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (10): T Ikem Ekwonu, G Damien Lewis, G Robert Hunt, C Austin Corbett, C Cade Mays, T Taylor Moton, T Yosh Nijman, T-G Brady Christensen, G Chandler Zavala, G Jarrett Kingston Injuries to guards Lewis (strained shoulder) and Zavala (knee) plays a factor in keeping 10 instead of the nine predicted going into camp. The starting five returning from 2024 had a solid preseason, but the lackluster play of backups showed depth remains a concern. DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (6): DE Derrick Brown, NT Bobby Brown III, DE Tershawn Wharton, DE A'Shawn Robinson, NT Cam Jackson , DE Jaden Crumedy A shoulder injury that has kept fifth-round pick Jackson from making an impact means Crumedy could make it here. The biggest cut will be Shy Tuttle, who has 32 starts the past two years but little to show for it. Moving on from him will create $2.4 million in cap space that can be used elsewhere. LINEBACKERS (10): OLB D.J. Wonnum, OLB Patrick Jones II, OLB Princely Umanmielen, OLB Nic Scourton, OLB Thomas Incoom, ILB Christian Rozeboom, ILB Trevin Wallace, ILB Claudin Cherelus, ILB Jon Rhattigan, ILB Jacoby Windmon The release of ILB Josey Jewell (concussion protocol) at the start of camp required immediate attention, but Rozeboom has stepped up well. Depth remains a big question, particularly inside. Moving on from draft pick Bam Martin-Scott means he'll likely end up on the practice squad. It was time to move on from OLB DJ Johnson. Look for turnover beyond the starters here. CORNERBACKS (5): Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, Chau Smith-Wade, Shemar Bartholomew, Corey ThorntonJackson has played well enough at times to ease the concern opposite Pro Bowler Horn. Thorton's play during camp has been a big surprise, but the overall depth of this group means there likely will be turnover. SAFETIES (4): Tre'von Moehrig, Nick Scott, Demani Richardson, Lathan Ransom The big question is how long it will take fourth-round pick Ransom to replace Scott as the starter opposite Moehrig. Also, don't rule out another experienced player being signed. SPECIALISTS (3): K Ryan Fitzgerald, P Sam Martin, LS JJ Jansen Big-legged undrafted free agent Fitzgerald out of Florida State may have solidified his spot over Matthew Wright with a 52-yard field goal in the second preseason game against the Texans. The other two spots are solid, but Carolina likely will keep an eye out for dependable veterans who end up being released.
