In all fairness he was not very good last year, or particularly good in Atlanta before that.

Well was anyone not named Christian on our team very good last year? He was good in Atlanta before that, everyone there wanted to keep him.

As a rough reference, Poe was PFF's 82nd ranked interior DL last year, a whopping 10 spots above Vernon Butler at 92. I also didn't say anything about Star, who I feel like had a monstrous 2013 both stuffing the run and rushing the passer but steadily declined thereafter.

Is that the end-all definitive source of truth? No, definitely not. But even assuming they're 25% low that puts him around 60th, smack at the bottom tier of starting interior lineman. I watched every game last year (a rarity since I am not a Carolina local) and 82nd fits about what I saw... not a great year in either the run or pass. This year has been better, be it scheme or otherwise.

PFF had Poe graded above average last year. That's the bottom line with PFF.

82nd best interior DL means there were more than 2, on average, per every NFL team better than him and Vernon was 'average' only 10 spots and 2.2 points lower. His grade wasn't far above average.

Besides, the proof is in the pudding. If you're a stats person in only 2 games this year he's produced 1/3 the total tackles, 2/3 QB hits, 1/2 the tfls, and the same number of sacks. If you're a 'scheme matters more' person not only are his numbers better but the defense as a whole looks better including both Shaq and Luke, who directly benefit from effective NT play in the 3-4 type looks, and the pass rush is much improved overall.

Argue semantics if you wish but evidence thus far points to the defense being better with Poe's increased effectiveness in his current role, for whatever reason, as an supportable part of that.

Well honestly I told people there was reason to believe he'd be much better this season because we were setting him up for success. So you're preaching to the choir on that note. I'm not surprised at all.

In my estimation, Poe is just another example of people jumping the gun way too early in their zeal to be overly critical of the GM. It's almost humorous for people to make declarations with such authority and surety, and then made to look (well) foolish! And it's a cyclical thing.

I generally try to analyze a situation by looking at circumstances and context, and observing a good sample size before I make definitive judgements about a player.

Like, the only new player I've been skeptical of is McCloud. I wouldn't trust him unless he was ill last week or something.

    • Things like this happen everyday. We live in a social media driven society where loyalty is a foreign concept.
    • If you draft a guy who is healthy and has no concerns about that whatsoever and he goes out and tears his ACL in his first few games in the regular season on a physical play that's a freak accident. But when you trade up to draft an RB who is already rehabbing from a recent ACL tear and he spends the next several months continuing his rehab only to tear the same ACL again after less than a handful of regular season carries in a non contact circumstance that is no freak accident. That is a textbook example of why you do not do what we did. Particularly for what is now a plug and play position. And when you have the highest paid OL in the league over the next two years. None of that makes any logical sense. Legitimately it is and was some Scott Fitterer type foolishness. Now as for XL. The guy has not been committed to his craft. I think anyone with eyes on the situation can and would recognize that. However the warning signs were there. One season of legit production raw prospect that we knew would take time to develop etc. But Morgan and Bryce Young's own father were very high on him. I think in some capacity the reality of our limitation at QB is entering into the equation. Even TMac got a lot of flak over the course of his rookie season for not being able to haul in all of Bryce's passes. At the end of the day our fourth year QB also needs to do his part to maximize the talent we have available. As far as this year. Again. WR round 1 boils down to where are we going to get the touches for the rookie? That would require eating into not only our 8th overall picks touches but also our #2 WR whom oh yeah by the way was UNDRAFTED. I am happy to discuss WR prospects here. I was thrilled we invested what we did last year in TMac because it needed to be done and it made sense from all angles. But nowhere is it written in stone that you cannot draft a good or great WR outside of the first round. Except in the Panthers building apparently. That is not a good reflection on our scouts and front office let me tell ya. Because there's no way on this earth we are going to get back to relevancy and legitimate contender status if we can't pick some gems in the later rounds. Simple and plain.
