Someone else thinks Allen keeps the job

Put yourself in the position of Ron, who was a front runner for losing his job this season.  You don’t know what you have in Cam right now.  Would you gamble your career on it?  I sure wouldn’t.

Agreed.

I will be really interested to see how Ron's press conference goes tomorrow.  Will not be the least bit surprised if he puts a moratorium on any and all questions about Cam.

At this point Cam does nothing but create headaches for Ron.  Boot on one day, boot off the next.  Ron covers Cam's back by spooning out some pablum about Cam not being able to travel to get ppl off Cam's back for not being at the game--and Cam goes and prances through the CLT airport and gets on a plane to somewhere.  The "vlog"...no heads up given to the coaches, players or team, blindsides them with it.  Etc... (not to mention looking like shiite in the 0-2 start)

On the flipside, QB7 does nothing but make life easy for Ron.  Wins.  Behaves well and always says the right thing to the press.  Wins.  Creates no controversy publicly.  Wins.  Ultimate team player.  Wins.  Heck he even cut the fumbles down to zero!

If you're Ron who do you want to go into the office and work with every day?

Exactly, this was how Fitzpatrick finessed the jets

If he continues to play well, we have a decision to make. Either he or Cam won't be here beyond this season. If we decide to roll with Allen, we commit to him financially and then release or trade Cam. If we decide to roll with Cam, we tender Allen  at a 1st round figure and then let him hit the market and take the 1st round pick or we work out a better trade. I don't see any way we keep both if Allen continues to play well and there are starting opportunities out there for him. From a business perspective, he and his agent will essentially he forced to take advantage of this opportunity and strike while the iron is hot. Case Keenum turned 14 starts and 3500 yards into a 2 year/$36M contract after the 2017 season. I would expect Allen to probably sign a similar short-term deal, but probably at a $20M+ per year average vs. the $18M Keenum got.

Allen is a couple of years away from being able to negotiate with anybody but us.

He's not a restricted free agent next year. He'll be an exclusive rights player.

Hold out.

You're not naive enough to think these agents don't have ways to gauge their clients' market value. And when I say "gauge", I absolutely mean getting teams to engage in tampering efforts.

His agent will just say he is being grossly underpaid, and he will threaten to sit out the entire season if they don't rework his deal.

I am very supportive of Kyle Allen and think his future is bright...

...but you're really getting ahead of yourself there --- this guy ain't sitting out any seasons, EVER.

And if there's one big-brass-balled league owner who is willing to play hardball it is Mr. David Tepper -- the "agent" stands no chance..

He won't have the ammo to hold out unless we get deep into the playoffs

He will if his agent gets feedback that there are teams willing to give him a starting QB contract. If that happens, teams would also be willing to offer the Panthers healthy trade offers. He REALLY will if - like the previous poster suggested leading to this conversation - we trade Cam. He and his agent would absolutely have us by the balls in that scenario. Honestly, if you're gonna trade Cam, you better get Allen signed FIRST.

Correct.

And for the record, if he showed that he was a good enough player to make a holdout seem like a legitimate threat, it'd actually be pretty wise to sign him.

For there to be serious consideration of trading Newton, Allen would have had to have performed at a high enough level to make them believe he could be the franchise guy.

If we traded Cam as the previous poster suggested, how in the world are you saying he wouldn't have the ammo? That's absolutely laughable. That suggestion was what led to this line of conversation.

That or we simply don't think he's going to bounce back and overcome these various injury issues.

If the Panthers were to trade Newton, the word "apocalypse" comes to mind with regard to this board.

If they choose to do that, I'd be behind it. The players and draft picks that could be had to make this team even better far outweighs the thought of Newton leaving Carolina. Thanks for your time here Cam, good luck in the future.
